Bleeding in early pregnancy

by ang79, Jun 30, 2007 12:00AM
Hi everyone. I am hoping someone out there can maybe put me at ease. I had my first prenatal appointment on Thursday and I was so excited to be getting a due date, etc., but it didn't end that way. Here's some background: My last period began on May 11th and I was expecting to be around 6w5d on my appointment. I went off the pill in late April and my cycle really wasn't back on track when I found out on June 9th that I was pregnant. I tested the Tuesday prior, but it had come back negative. The tests on the 9th were faint, but positive. I had a visit with my regular doc on the 14th and did blood test that came back positive also. I started spotting this past Sunday, the 24th. It is only when I wipe and is usually either light pink or bright red. I have had a little brown. I haven't noticed any tissue or clots though. Dr. did a vaginal ultrasound at my appointment this Thursday and found no yolk sac or fetal pole, which is worrisome. I was devastated. Dr. said that I could just not be as far along as thought. We are doing HCG tests 48 hours apart and I am waiting on results on Monday. I was told it could either have been miscarriage, not that far along, or ectopic. I haven't had any cramping that doesn't seem like normal uterus stretching and haven't passed any clots or tissue that I know of. I would notice that, right? My breasts are still tender, but now that the doubt is planted I am questioning if they are as tender as before. The spotting still hasn't stopped though and it has been 7 days. I am so scared to find out it is ectopic or miscarriage. I don't know what to think. I keep hearing different things, bleeding is normal, bleeding isn't normal, etc. I am hoping for good news on Monday, but my emotions are all over the place. One moment I am optimistic and the next I am pessimistic. I am a mess! Does anyone else think that it could just be too early to see anything on an ultrasound? Is the bleeding connected? There is a possibility that I didn't ovulate until the first week of June. Would that put me too early to see a sac or fetal poles on an ultrasound this week?

it could be hematoma. you should look that up.

Wow I am in the same situation just like you. Exactly the same but on monday the doctor told my hcg dropped. so they also think i either misscariage or is ectopic. i also had brown spotting then it went to light red then to bleeding. i went for an ultrasound just being 5 weeks pregnant form my count and they didnt see a sac or a fetus. now im going to go back in a week for blood work. good luck i know exactly what you are feeling. keep me posted i would like to know what happens. please since we are in the same situation

Wouldn't there have to be a placenta to have a hematoma at this early stage? I just did some reading on it and most people seem to be at around 11 or 12 weeks when they discover they have a hematoma. I thought I was around 6w, but if it is earlier than I thought I could only bee at 3 or 4w. 3 or 4w seems to even be too late for implantation bleeding (especially that last for a week). They couldn't even see anything in my uterus when they did the ultrasound, but he did say that it was slightly enlarged and thickening.

I am sorry to hear you are in the same boat as me. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Was your bleeding pretty bad? Everything I have read says that if you bleed enough to fill a pad in an hour to then be worried. I still haven't had any bleeding that bad. The worst part about it is how consistent it is. I only see blood when I wipe. The first 3 days I saw one spot the entire day and nothing the rest. The 3rd day I had some brown blood on my underwear and then nothing else the rest of the day until 10pm when I had another spot of pink. Thursday I started seeing it everytime I wiped, but I have been wearing a pantyliner since then and I am not even bleeding enough to see it on the liner, but I do see blood everytime I wipe. Sometimes it is just pink, othertimes red, sometimes pink with red dots, but there is no real substance to it. No clots, no tissue that I can discern (I wish I had an example of what tissue looks like). I mostly still just seem to be having a lot of excess discharge with some blood swirled in with it. I am still not having any cramping or back pain (other than what I am creating myself from tightening with worry). I am not lookng forward to hearing my HCG results on Monday. I guess I am preparing for the worst.

Try to stay positive.  I have been pregnant twice and bled both times.  The first one ended in a miscarriage.  The other one is a healthy girl due this month.  It is very scary to bleed while pregnant but many, many women have gone through it.  Good luck and just hang in there.

I ended up having a miscarriage last night. I was never able to even get my test results back. My HCG was at 290 last night and should have been in the 10,000 range at 7w. I am hoping it was a complete miscarriage and won't have to have D&C. Radiologist thinks he saw fibroid tumor, lab tech thought it was a gestational sac. I guess I have more waiting to do, but I guess at least I know what all the bleeding was related to now. I ended up passing a pretty large clot of blood and tissue and had pain like labor pain for about 3 hours until it passed.
