Breast Feeding Pain?

Breast Feeding Pain?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to breastfeed without the pain from the baby sucking? and When can I start to pump?

With my first it hurt for about a week to breastfeed then it stopped. Use lasinoh inbetween feedings (they sell it at Target), they also make cooling pads that help a bit. As soon as you get over the hump it will be easier. I think my doctor wanted me to wait at least 4 weeks to pump, but it could be different for everyone.

It hurt during the first 2 weeks for me.  Not only from the baby sucking, but also I ended up with bleeding and scabs, with both of my babies.  I used lanolin to help with the that, and also they have those soothie pads that you put in your bra.  They are made of some sort of gel, and you can even put them in the refridgerator for even more pain relief.  As mentioned above, I wouldn't pump for at least 4-6 weeks.  It is better to establish your milk supply first, and it seems like pumping to early just frustrates people.  You won't get much milk out by pump before you have established your supply.  Good luck!

Great advice ladies. With all three it was a matter of 7 days or so before the sore nipples faded. I also had cracked and bleeding nipples. It take a little bit of time to adjust, lanisoh is a great suggestion. and I also agree with waiting to start pumping, best to get the supply well established by baby first. Nursing frequently and on demand will get that supply going better than the pump. My guys never went more than 1.5 hours between nursing sessions during the first 6 weeks or more.

have you had a lactation consultant evaluate your baby's latch? some pain in the beginning is normal, but if it seems extreme the baby may not be latching properly.

with myself the pain came from them just latching on to the tip of the nipple rather than taking it plus the arreola. most hospitols will have a lactation consultant you can go to after, mine will charge $20 the first visit only.  there are private ones, and maybe check out the la leche group?  pumping hurts the nipples more than anything when i did it.  i hope it gets easier for you!

I tried breastfeeding for 2 weeks, I was in great pain and DS was losing weight. I even saw the lactation nurse 7 times.  I ended up renting the same type of pump the hospital uses, it was great. Dual pumping and it did not hurt. I pumped for 4 months, every 3 hours. I was up to 8 oz per side and it took about 15-20min to pump. I had so much milk that I had to freeze it and for about 3 weeks after I stopped, I still had frozen milk.   I highly recommend it. It wasn't cheap but you can rent the pump here in Canada at some drug stores. It was about $90 for the first month and $40 every month after. It was nice to have such a good quality pump.

i unfortunately did not have the same success pumping.  I hurt really bad after almost 2 weeks that i went to the pump and I will tell you it is what I regret the most!  I wish I would have stuck it out a bit longer.
