Breast feeding after having a breast reduction

by Meese, Jan 18, 2007 12:00AM
Good afternoon ladies,

I'm wondering if there are any mothers out there who have had breast reductions and were still able to breast feed.  I had a breast reduction 9yrs ago because of severe back pain and now that I'm pregnant I'm worrying that I won't be able to breast feed.  I have some feeling in my breasts but not too much so I'm afraid I'm going to miss out on this wonderful experience with my baby.
If you or someone you know was still able to breastfeed please let me know!

thanks!!

Never had a reduction myself, but I came across this website a while back when I was looking up some general breastfeeding information. Hope it helps!

I had a breast reduction two years before I had my DD she is now 2 1/2. I was worried about the same thing before she was born. My labor was real long and at the end of the day we had her finally. I was too exhausted to try to breast feed. I didn't really try so I went with bottle feeding, three days later my milk came in full force. I didn't know that my milk would come in or not. I was really nervous about it and didn't take classes or study too much about breast feeding. I totally have regrets not breastfeeding.
When I get pregnant again I am definetely breastfeeding no matter how hard it is. I think you will be fine just as long as you try. Don't give up like I did. I'm sure your milk will come in and that you will be able to breast feed.
Formula is good too though if you can't.

i had the surgery done ten years ago. my doc said if you have the scar around your nipple then chances of breastfeeding are slim. he said that they would have disrupted the milk ducts. that is the type i had, where they made the "keyhole" incision and he said make alternative plans.:( i still hope to at least try when i conceive again.

good luck
