Breastfeding and foods and drimks to avoid? 2 week old seems to be having tummy aches

by thendricks, Mar 23, 2007 12:00AM
My 2 week old son has been acting like he has a tummy ache the last 2 days, I'm wondering if It's something I have ate or drank... Besides the obvious no alcahol (alcohol), are there things i need to avoid eating and drinking that might be causing his tummy to hurt? Thanks and god bless

My biggest offenders are dairy (I switch to lactaid milk while nursing), onions, cabbage, italian and mexican spices, beans, and the usual gassy foods. I can't cut veggies completely, so I kkep simethicone drops handy ; )

anything that causes gas to you should be avoided.  I too suffered, trying to figure out what was causing my dd to have such terrible belly cramps...i don't eat alot of veggies, i drink little milk...she is 3-1/2 months old now and FINALLY....not in constant pain!!!!  I switched to formula, and it has made the world of difference, however, we just switched and i am truly disappointed that i couldn't breastfeed longer.  :(

another thing that can make a baby's belly hurt, is chocolate I know it sounds weird but is true.

To pinpoint the cause try cutting out offending foods one at a time.  Biggest offender for me have always been dairy and spicy food.

in our breastfeeding class that is tought on our L&D unit, we teach our patients to watch their babies cues. eat whatever you want because what upsets someone elses baby's tummy won't always be the same for you. if your baby seems upset after you have eaten something then back off that food for about a month and then try again. of course no drugs or alcohol.

Avoid anything in the broccoli and cabbage family. Also some babies have trouble with onions, garlic, or very spicy foods.

i switched to enfamil for babies who spit up...it is likely a combination of formula and my dd's age. (she puked alot too!!!) at 3 mos they can start to get rid of more gas on their own.  good luck

You could try the Dr. Sears Elimination Diet.  It is an excellent way to determine and allergies/intolerances in your little one.  It takes some discipline to do it but it's totally worth it to get answers!  I think you could google it and read more.  Hope that helps!

When I was nursing my son I had to avoid all fruits, dairy, spicy foods, red sauces, cheescake, etc.  A lot of things have dairy in them that you don't realize!  (breads, muffins, etc.) Just read the labels and watch for " whey" when you read the list of ingredients.  I also went to the pediatrician because my little one has such severe reflux (projectile!).  We tried Zantac, Prevacid, and Axid.  The Zantac seemed to help the tummy aches the best.  The prevacid seemed to cause him to have stomach aches worse! My son is now on formula and we only use Mylicon drops when he has a tummy ache.  I put him on Similac Isomil Advanced.  This is soy based.  His reflux seems to have gone away and he rarely has tummy aches now.

Both of my boys would get upset tummies if I ate peppers or chocolate.  I could eat broccoli and beans and onions no upsetting them--but Chocolate would scream bloody murder  about and hour after nursing and cry for a good half hour--so I learned quick not to eat chocolate and tried to make sure if I was having a dessert at someone's house to try and see what was in it before I ate it.

dairy, eggs, broccoli, cabbage, nuts, chocolate...sorry, but the list goes on.  You need  to see what's making it worse for your little one b/c every baby is different.  My DD cannot still tolerate dairy (she's 6 months).  Good luck, breastfeeding is a huge commitment and sometimes feels like a big pain in the behind but it's the best thing you can do for your little one :)

I nursed one baby for a year and am going on four months with a second and I have never avoided any foods.  We have used Mylicon drops and the football hold for the occasional tummyache, and that has always been enough.  I drink coffee, eat chocolate, ice cream, and lots of Mexican food.  Perhaps I have been blessed with two very tolerant babies?  Maybe as baby develops things will get easier.
