Breastfeeding and pumping at work

by ImmortalOne, Nov 15, 2007 09:01PM
For those of you who are breastfeeding... I have a few questions.

When pumping at work:

1.)  How long does it take?
2.)  What kind of job do you have?
3.)  Where do you pump?
4.)  How does your employer handle this?
5.)  How do you store/transport the milk?
6.)  How old is your baby?
7.)  How much on average do you get when you pump?
8.)  What kind of pump do you have?

And I'm sure I'll have more questions, but need to feed Lilith again.

1.)  How long does it take? ---- I've never really timed it... especially for both sides.
2.)  What kind of job do you have? ---- I work in retail, without any place that is private.
3.)  Where do you pump? ---- on lunch, at home or my mom's house... because I have no place to pump at work... which makes lunch a rushed time when I take one.
4.)  How does your employer handle this? ---- Supposedly if I worked at the corporate office, they have a pumping room... but... yeah...
5.)  How do you store/transport the milk? ---- Never brought home stuff, always able to store on site where I am pumping at (home or mom's)
6.)  How old is your baby? ---- 12 weeks (normally eating 4-6 oz a sitting every 3-4 hours)
7.)  How much on average do you get when you pump? ---- Depends on the time between feedings.  (4hrs = 4oz each side some days)  (8hrs = 6-8oz each side)
8.)  What kind of pump do you have?  ----- Avent Manual (Mom's house), Double pump (forget the name... came with Soothie bottles) at home... and just got my single pump Medela up and running again to keep in the car (for work.... if I can...)

I haven't technically started back yet, but i've made all the arrangements.

1.)  How long does it take? hopefully at work it'll only take 30 min since it will only be 6 hours from my last pumping session

2.)  What kind of job do you have? i'm a preschool teacher in a public school.

3.)  Where do you pump? i arranged to use the school nurse's office. i'm thinking of also doing a small pumping session while i drive to pick up dd from daycare. apparently many women do it with the help of a hands-free device.

4.)  How does your employer handle this? they have no choice but to handle it, i think :) i plan to pump during my lunch/prep time

5.)  How do you store/transport the milk? there is a fridge the nurse said i can use. for the drive i'll use a cooler bag.

6.)  How old is your baby? 4 months old today!!!!!

7.)  How much on average do you get when you pump? i'm like you- i get about an ounce out of each breast for each hour i go between pumping. obviously this fluctuates a little.

8.)  What kind of pump do you have? i have the pump in style advance, but also like my medela harmony (a manual pump). haven't decided which to take to work yet. harmony much more portable but requires use of a hand which will make it harder to eat while i pump.

how long - not more than 15 minutes
in a small room at work, in a private room at the airport, in my car (I kept a spare pump and electric thing in my car so I could pump there if need be!)

I used four pumps - hospital grade
medela something
and two not great retail type ones

I got between 4-8 ounces per side

i would think employers would be required to accomodate pumping needs. i'd say it's a medical issue- if i don't pump, i get clogged ducts and mastitis. does anyone know if women who need to pump are protected? are employers required to provide a time/place for pumping?

1.)  How long does it take? 15 min of pumping (5 to clean, and put away)
2.)  What kind of job do you have? Nurse on labor and delivery unit--working two 12 hours shifts a week
3.)  Where do you pump? in the break room
4.)  How does your employer handle this? very supportive, provides hospital grade medela pump for us pumpers to use, tries to provide timely breaks to pump
5.)  How do you store/transport the milk? store in fridge/transport in cooler
6.)  How old is your baby? 4 months 1 week
7.)  How much on average do you get when you pump? 5-10oz every 3-4 hours (more in the morning, less in the evening)
8.)  What kind of pump do you have? I own a medela pump in style advanced, but use hosptial grade symphony pump when working.
Hope this helps! I also pumped for my son while working for over a year. Let me know if you have more questions. It is fun to compare with people .

Tiredbuthappy, of course we aren't protected in the USA.  Hell they can't even decide if we are protected while pregnant with complications.  It's pretty crappy a situation to be totally honest.  I go 8-10 hours between pumping/feeding right now which worries me that my supply is going to be diminished.  I don't have time to pump because of my job and often being alone at the kiosk... I'm hoping that my shift will change a little and when we get our car fixed, I'll try to go home to pump and nurse again on lunch.... *sigh*
