Can a 4 month old develop colic?

My 4 month old has been diagnosed with acid reflux and was prescribed pepcid when he was 2 months old.  He has been on Enfamil A.R. formula also.  Unfortunately, this thicker formula seems to constipate him (small hard balls).  Once he was put on the pepcid he has been a different baby...cooing and laughing.  Just recently he had some major outbursts of crying/screaming.  We thought he was constipated and went to the E.R.  They released us with a diagnosis of constipation but the Dr. said they don't consider constipation until they haven't had a bowel movement in four days (at this point it was only two days and he had a bowel movement in the e.r.)  After that we went to our pediatrician b/c he had another outburst.  The pediatrician didn't really give us an answer either.  He changed his formula to Enfamil Gentlease. Since we've been using the Gentlease he has done nothing but cried morning nooon and night. If he is not eating or sleeping, he is crying and sometimes screaming.  He is eating well and sleeping well (no problems with either one, and never has).  We put a call into the dr. again after 3 days of this and he wants to put him on Prevacid and switch his formula again to Enfamil Nutramigen to help with his constipation.  I feel like I am at my wits end with the crying.  If he is not eating or sleeping, he is crying.  We just want our little happy, cooing and laughing baby back.  Has anyone had a similiar experience?  I am hesitant to switch his formula again and really not sure about giving him Prevacid.  I hate that he is on Pepcid and I guess Prevacid is a more potent medication.  Today I switched him back to the Enfamil A.R. (because it was helping and it seems to settle him when he was upset) and mixing some prune juice with water to help with the bowel movements.  After that he did have a loose bowel movement today (after two days of no bowel movements) and was back to his old self briefly (2 1/2 hours) then took a nap and awoke to crankiness and crying again!  If anyone could give me some help I would appreciate it.  We have also tried Mylicon drops for gas but don't think they really help.  We try to keep him elevated most of the day for the reflux and put a pillow under his mattress.  Thanks!

My daughter is 5 months old and we have been struggling with reflux her whole life. She was also extremely colicky from 2 weeks to 3 months or so. But even after the typical colic faded (the several hours straight screaming), she still had many problems. She had been on Zantac and it definitely helped, but not enough. At her 4 month check-up, the ped gave us some prevacid to try. It's supposed to take a week to fully kick in, but about 24 hours after the first dose she did a complete 180 and was an entirely different child. It was like a miracle. We have tried since to wean her off the zantac, but if she skips a dose she gets bad, so for now we are doing both prevacid and zantac. The combo seems to be working and I now have my jolly little baby. I know exactly what you mean about wanting your happy baby. Every now and then she has a setback (esp. if we miss a dose of zantac) and I am reminded of how miserable the reflux makes the poor thing. It breaks my heart to think of how much pain she must've been in duirng those months of screaming.

I say definitely give the prevacid a try. It's not that it's stronger, i think it works differently than other medications. You'll know within a week whether or not it helps. By the way, if you are taking him off of pepcid, keep him on it for a while. My husband is a pharmacist and said it can take 1 to 2 weeks for the prevacid to build up in the system.

I agree with tiredbuthappy.. try the prevacid. My LO was on zantac for a couple of months. It worked but we had to up the dose constantly.  Since we switched to prevacid he has been great.  He had a little trouble sleeping the first couple of nights but hasn't had any problems since and we haven't had to up his dose at all.  He is on the solutabs and takes 7.5mg (half a tab) 1x a day.  We just have him on regular similac formula.

I hate medicating my lo but I think it is worth it.
