Cerclage- Short Cervix

Cerclage- Short Cervix

I am 19 weeks to date. Today during my ultrasound, my cervix measured 2.87 but it is not thinning out.  I go back in another week for another measurement but the possibility of a cerclage has been discussed.  Has anyone gotten the cerclage and still been able to function with minimal or no bedrest?

My understanding is that they put those in earlier in pregnancy.

I've had a few friends that have had to have one, and you can live a pretty normal life, but you will get more information from your doctor if/when this happens.

You will most likely have to be more careful, have some amount of bedrest, and all of that. I think that if your cervix had been at 3 this wouldn't be something your doctor brought up, but I could be wrong.  It is good that your doctor is keeping an eye on things, because what usually happens is that they don't pay attention to these things until it is too late.

It's very good that your cervix isn't thinning out. Try not to worry too much at this point.  Just think of it as your doctor being extra careful and giving you the best care that they can.

I spoke with my OB yesterday evening and was told that at this point I am under constant watch to err on the side of caution.  I carried my DS full term with no complications or cerclage so they will just watch me with this pregnancy.  This is the first time that I have measured under 3 so there was never a reason for the procedure.  I would very much rather be safe than sorry.  I'm glad my OB is willing to pay such close attention.  I was especially assured that since there is no funneling I will just continue to be watched.

my aunt has had a cerclage with all four of her pregnancies b/c of imcompetant cervix and is always put on bedrest from 5 months on but her cervix usually starts to thin out by then also.

That is amazing that your DD was able to survive at 23 weeks gestation!!!  You were truely blessed.  I am optimistic things will work out, cerclage or not.  My OB sounds really assuring that my body is capable of carry by daughter.  My DS was overdue with no cerclage and weighed over 9lbs.

I had my 4 year old dd at 23 weeks the dr is assuming the cause was an incompetent cervix so with this pre. I got a cerclauge at 15 weeks and have been on modified bedrest since. I am now 23.6 weeks and everything is fine. The earlier the better fo r the cerclauge. The norm is between 14 and 19 weeks, I have heard. It is better to be safe than sorry because if you wait until your cervix starts tro give way then you  may not be able to get a cerclauge. Your dr is doing the right thing and it is so good that he caught this early.
