Cervix changes-shortening, funneling

by jenstam, Jul 02, 2009 11:34AM
Ugh...I hate asking this question, but I am trying to see if anyone who has cervix issues in pregnancy has had symptoms. If so, what were they? I lost what we think was my mucus plug last Saturday. I'm only 20 weeks. Also, I have never had this problem before and this is my sixth pregnancy. No bleeding or anything since, but last night I started having an aching, throbbing pain where I would visualize my cervix is, in the upper part of my vagina. It's not severe. I hate to be a pain to the OB Dept but they never even checked things when I was there on Monday! So anyhow, I feel maybe I should get things checked out, but hate to make a big deal out of it if it's nothing! I'm mostly curious to know if any of you that had early cervical changes that required a cerclage or bed rest had symptoms. Thanks.

Great question for Tanker.  Just call and ask the triage nurse, then maybe she will suggest you come in?

I'd at least call them, it does not sound like something to just let go by.  I had funneling in my first pregnancy, but no particular symptoms.  You bet I would have jumped (in to see them) if it had been hurting.

You might not have any symptoms at all, or you could feel pressure and have discharge.  But a lot of what you feel could be you just focusing on that area out of worry.

I'm a strong believer in just letting them know what's going on.  Don't worry about bothering anyone.  That's what they get paid, and paid well, to do.

Peek, that's what I keep thinking, that maybe I'm just focusing on it. I hate to call again, but maybe if they would take a look and assure me that things are fine I would feel better! I suppose I can just call and ask. I've thought about switching doctors. Mine has MS and sees patients less and less. She is working a partial schedule now and no longer delivers ): So, it's hard to get in with someone I know now. I am usually stuck with a student and NP, not that they're bad, I just miss being able to get in with my doctor!

When I was pg with my son Jacob, I was 90% effaced at 29wks and 100% effaced a couple weeks after that.. I was put on bed rest from 29wks to 35wks.. honestly.. i never felt anything..  the dr at the perinatal center did an u/s of my cervix during my routine u/s and discovered it was short.

When I got pg this time, I asked my reg OB several times if we needed to check my cervix more often or if I needed a cerclage.. she was always like.."no, we'll check it out at 29wks"...  I honestly don't think she even knows how to u/s the cervix.  I think the only cervix check they do at the regular OB is a physical check but I'm sure all dr are different.  Anway.. at my 18wk u/s with the perinatal center I told them I had experienced some watery discharge so the checked my cervix and that is when they saw I was 4 cm dilated and the membrane was starting to poke out... Again this time, I felt nothing....  I did have the watery discharge but looking back, i think that might have been a coincidence because it came back after the cerclage and only went away after they treated me for a yeast infection.. so I really I think it was just the yeast infection that was causing the watery discharge.

At my appt today, i told them I had been feeling some occasional pinching feeling in what I think is my cervix..  They said that it was pretty common/normal, and it is usually the baby's feet or head putting pressure on the cervix.

I would bring it to your dr's attention for sure..

best of luck to you..
