Cold Sores and Herpes

by linlea, Oct 11, 2003 12:00AM
Sorry to post this here, but everywhere else costs money. I was just wondering if anyone here knows if the herpes virus can be transmitted from the lip version (cold sores) to the genitals. I have always wondered this and have never, in all my researching, been able to find an answer to my question. Anybody know?

Hi, I believe yes.  Go to www.greatpills.com/herpes
Or put "cold sores transferred to genitals" on Google, and a bunch of things will come up.  That's what I did and the above page came up.

Yep, she is right. They can be transmitted either way, oral to genital and vice versa.

Okay, what if I have a cold sore, he kisses me and then he performed oral sex? Can my spit on his mouth transfer this to my genitals? And what if there is no sore, and when after an outbreak is it safe to kiss again?

If you have an open, oozing cold sore, it would be unwise for him to kiss you and then perform oral sex.

The risk of transmittal is highest when you have a visible lesion.  After the lesion is cleared up, you can probably get right back to...whatever...although you should always be practicing safe sex, anyway!  There are a lot more dangerous bugs out there!
