Coloring Hair During Pregnancy (aka: I Want My Color Back!)

Coloring Hair During Pregnancy (aka: I Want My Color Back!)

I have really done it now...
At the beginning of my pregnancy, I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up the usual blonde that I kept my hair due to the whole "hair coloring" process.
I figured that as soon as I was into my 2nd trimester I'd color it brown and not have to worry about my hair until after the baby is born.

Well, I've been on a "low" the past few weeks and felt like changing my hair back to blonde would give me a little mood boost. I'm now in my 3rd trimester, so I felt the baby would be in no danger (well ventilated bathroom, and careful about the fumes).

I tried dying my hair back to the regular blonde, and it only turned my hair a light reddish/blonde.

I'm now more miserable than ever!! :-(
I'm fat, can't exercise, constantly out of breath and feel absolutely disgusted with my looks. All I wanted was a "little" change to lift my spirits and help my self esteem.

Does anyone know anything about hair coloring, or how I can get my hair back to being blonde? If I wait a couple of days, and try to color it blonde again with the same stuff, will it be blonde, or some other yucky color??

I swear, if Justin Timberlake could write a song for me right now, he'd have to call it "Please Bring My Color Back" LOL

As for the hair, I had highlights done in my third trimester and they not only turned out beautifully but they really lifted my spirits.  I hate to suggest spending the money, but I do suggest it over home jobs -- go to a salon (even the SuperCuts kind does good color) and pony up and tell the colorist what you have been doing.  He or she will take care of you, they deal with home coloring correction all the time.  Good luck, it will make you feel so lovely!

My sister is a hair stylist and when that happens you have to take the red out by using a higher level of blonde but should wait at least 2 weeks becouse it can damage your hair...Good Luck

Thank you both! :-)

I will probably let a professional do it...just to be on the safe side!

sorry, no suggestions on how to fix the home coloring job.  I just wanted to say I know how you feel.  I'm 34 weeks and my once blonde hair is now black roots!  I'm planning on dying my hair a couple weeks before my due date, because I want to look good in all the pictures I'll be in with the baby, etc. If we can't be skinny we can at least be blonde!

Wow...I'm scared now!

I will talk to someone this next week about getting it done professionally. Unfortunately, my hairstylest is doing a show in CA this week, and will be NYC the following week, so my next haircut was set for the 26th (I have to have my appt set up over a month in advance!)
That means it will be a few weeks before I'm able to get anything done to correct it. I'll have to suffer with the weird color I've created! Ughhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well, at this point I should have known luck would not be with me...  :-(

But thanks for all your help!

I used to do hair and before I got pregnant, I colored my own hair blonde with a professional high-lift tint, double the 40 volume peroxide, with a blue color corrector (to get rid of the orange I tend to pull).  It was STRONG stuff (would burn my head), so I haven't done it while pregnant.  They just don't know how much of which chemicals are absorbed into the blood stream through your scalp, so I didn't want to chance it.  Also, my doctor told me not to color.  So I went to heavy highlights at the salon and it's been working out well--still blonde, but nothing touches my scalp.

Artificial color is harder to lift than natural color and a lot of times when going from an artificial darker color to lighter color, you have to strip the color from the hair before lightening it.  Now that you've tried to lift the brown color with tint, you really need to have corrective color done.  I would think the the best way to do that since you are pregnant would be to have a professional put both highlights and lowlights (blonde and brunette) back into your hair.  But I really would not mess with it on your own again at this point.

Be careful with supercuts. They made me sign a waiver that said the color could come out wrong if you're pregnant, blablabla. I wasn't worried because I already had done it myself during my pregnancy. Halfway this lady tells me "I'm using non-permanent color so it'll be surely safe". That's not what I was paying for!!!

That is EXACTLY what I thought too! I told dh yesterday that I hate seeing myself in holiday photos and baby shower photos with brown hair...it's just not me! And I told him I would definitely be blonde again before I give birth, because I wanted to at least look normal in pictures with the new baby! LOL

I just feel so run down lately, and I'm only 26 weeks!

Oh well, it's a sacrifice worth making! :-)

i got my hair highlighted after my first trimester.  i get foil highlights so the color never touched my scalp.  i was told the only thing you have to worry about is your hair not changing to the right color due to hormones.  You'll be fine and it will make you feel tons better about yourself.  have fun with it.
