Colposcopy while pregnant

Colposcopy while pregnant

I just got back from my 16 week check-up.  Apparently my Pap came back abnormal and after more testing they found out I have the HPV.  It is the high risk kind.  I have a couple of questions I was hoping someone could help me with.  I have always had normal paps.  In fact, the last one I had was in May and it was fine.  Is it normal for this to happen?  Is it more common than I think?  They told me I was going to have to get a colposcopy done....which is going to be next week.  What should I expect?  I am really nervous!  The doctor made it sound like it is not a big deal, but I know that I am at risk for Cancer, which is really scary!!!!!  I am hoping someone can shed a little light and make me feel better about this!  Thanks!

I had the same problem early in this pregnancy, never had abnormal paps in the past and freaked out. My doctor told me that my cells were still abnormal but that he would wait until after the pregnancy to check again. Labor should take care of it and flush out the bad stuff, but if it doesn't he'll have to do a colposcopy. He talked to me about the different approaches, and none of them seem like a big deal. You should be ok, just do as your doctor tells you and get checked more regularly. Cancer is a big deal in my family already so I freaked out too, but the only thing we can do is be more aware and keep checking! Good Luck!

I just had a colposcopy on friday- Im 12 weeks pregnant. The doc took two biopsies and scraped. I had this same issue with my first child, except that doctor felt that it was risky to take more than one biopsy- I had 4 different colposcopies with three different biopsies through out the pregnancy and I and my baby were fine... This time..it  hurt but I was ok afterwards, until yesterday. Part of my mucous plug came out and now I'm bleeding bright red blood with mild cramping. I go in in a half an hour to see whats goin on. If you can wait, please wait. My doctor didn't give me a choice but now I realize I could have said something and wish I would have. With my first baby, all the precancerous stuff cleared up before she was born- and I was at the final stage before cancer...Please make sure you discuss your options fully with your doctor!
