Completely Off Topic... need advice

For those of you who have had car accidents in which a check was issued for the repair (especially minor cosmetic) can you please send me a private message?  *sigh*  The transmission shop got in an accident with my car 10 days ago... their (the transmission shops) insurance company issued me a check (not the garage where we were considering having the work done), but after finally getting to see the damage and talking to the collision shop I'm thinking that since its only cosmetic having them do another 2k in repairs (on top of the 2k for the transmission repair) isn't worth having it done on a car that is only worth 4-5k anyway.....

So... can I cash this check, and pay off the financing that we took out to get the transmission work done?  Or whatever?  Any advise?  There is nothing seriously wrong with the car, it was genuinely only cosmetic...

Hi there. The money is yours to use as your own discretion. We did this about a year ago. Had a friend to fix the car, cost 1/2 less than the estimate. Kept the rest. You're not held accountable for the surplus ( I tried to IM this, but it won't send. Hope you don't get it about 3-4 times later, lol!) Hope your luck improves!

someone hit my car in a parking lot 5 years ago. the damage was estimated to be $1500 and the insurance company cut me a check. the car still has the damage :)

if you don't mind the damage, use the check for your bills. mine was basically a huge dent, but the paint job was still good, so i knew it wouldn't rust through.

If you check around, you could probably have someone make it look good without the high price. Some guys that work privately are really good and cheap! Put the rest into a diaper fund!

I'm not worried about how it looks.  Its cosmetic really.  The car itself was free to us (given to us by Lilith's godmother) so we'd have a safe car for her (all we had to do was get the transmission fixed).  We figured to use the cash where we need it with bills and getting the car street legal.
