Conception

I recently found out I am pregnant.  The doctors and pregnancy calculators are putting me at 6 weeks, but the ultrasound only showed a yolk sack.  There are 2 possible dates that I could've gotten preganant May 12 and May 26.  According tothe calculators i got pregnant May 12 but they keep saying that my conception date isMay 27.  How is it possible for my conception date and gestational age to differ?  Knowing what day I got pregnant is important to me because I broke up with my boyfriend on May 12 but not before we had sex and became active with a long time friend on May 26.  Can someone please help?

I don't know how, but have they offered to do an ultrasound to determine the date better?

Yes they did an ultrasound and they said 6 weeks 1 day but they only seen a yolk sack.  I've done a little research and through that have found that by 6 weeks they should have seen more than just the yolk sack.

Pregnancy is dated officially by the first day of the last menstrual period.  Conception happens two weeks later, on the average.  I know that sounds confusing, but it is because the first day of the last period is a known date, an obvious signal.  Conception happens inside you and is hidden and on an unknown date.  So for generations, doctors have simply calibrated everything to the first day of the woman's last period.

It's too bad that your first day of your last period was not May 12 or 13, then you would know for sure it wasn't your ex-boyfriend's.  But the data you are saying sounds like it is more likely to be the old friend's.  I would go with that as a rough assumption for now, but then for obvious moral and legal reasons, do a DNA test once the baby is born.  Everyone involved including the baby has a right to an absolute answer on this, and the dates are just too close together to assume.

The age of the baby isn't going by conception date, it's going by your last period....which is around 14 days before conception. Hence the difference in days.

Also, it's not uncommon to only see a yolk sac at 6 weeks....

Actually AnnieBrooke my LMP is May 14.  I agree on the DNA test and have plans on getting one.  I also assumed that the old friend was the father because of the doctors not seeing more.  I know the DNA test is the only real way to know but I don't want to wait 8 months to find out.

I really feel stupid for being in this situation in the first place.  So I guess i'm getting what I deserve.  But I did everything the right way.  I broke up with my BF because I found out he wasn't being faithful, once I knew we were over, the long time friend and I got tested waited for results and then became active.

If your LMP was the 14--after sex with your ex--it's rare that it could be his. Nothing's impossible, but assuming you have normal cycles, the date of intercourse with the friend is almost perfect timing to have happened at ovulation time.

Kayla-
It's not an ideal situation to be in, but stuff like this happens. All you can do from here is be responsible and take care of yourself and that growing bump. Everything happens for a reason...

Early sonogram is very accurate. Seeing only a sac at 6 weeks is GREAT, that is exactly what you should see around that time.

You can get DNA tests via amniocentesis but remember that an amnio does have a risk of miscarriage. They can also perform it later.

Because you had a period right after having sex with your boyfriend and your conception date was stated as on or about May 27th, I would be confident that it is your friend's baby. These early sonogram measurements are more accurate than any measurements you'd get via sonogram later on down the road, as babies start to grow and develop at their own rates.

*They can also perform it in late pregnancy (is what I meant to say in regards to the amnio). Waiting until birth is ideal, though.

I would agree that it is the old friends baby, given your LMP was on 5/14. Do you have a preference for who the Father is?

At this point Jenstam, no I don't have a preference.  Of course my new boyfriend and I are starting a life together but my last boyfriend wasn't a bad person.  He just couldn't be monogamous.  Thank you so much for not judging me Rubyolivia and everybody else.  JoyRenee I definitely thought of amniocentesis but looked at the size of the needle and freaked! So I will be waiting until birth.
