Concerned about article on Soy Based Infant Formula

My DD drinks Enfamil Prosobee (Soy) because I started out breastfeeding her and she had really bad diarrhea.  The ped recommended cutting all dairy from my diet which helped.  I don't remember everything about the time (DD is 8.5 months now) but for some reason I was told to go with Soy formula because she was exhibiting a lactose intolerance.  Anyway, she has been on this formula since about 6-8 weeks.  She does great with it.  I got a new "Parenting" magazine in the mail and there was an article saying that Soy formula was not nearly as good as milk based.  Now I am really concerned since DD has been on it for 6 months.  Should I try to switch her to milk based or just wait since she only has over 3 months on formula?  I just feel horrible thinking I have not been giving her what is best!

soy is an acceptable alternative for children who cannot tolerate milk-based products. breast milk is best, then milk-based formula (as long as it doesn't make the child ill), then soy. this is definitely something you should discuss with your ped before switching. was it an intolerance or signs of an allergy?

not advice but something to consider- when dd recently had a bad stomach bug, it took her a long time to recover. the ped said her digestive system needed time to recover. he advised we take her off of regular formula for a week. he recommended lactose-free formula for sensitive babies or soy. we went with the lactose-free and she did well. the whole point of this seemingly irrelevent story is that if a baby is having trouble digesting regular formula, lactose-free is a good milk-based alternative. did you try that back when dd was having problems? maybe if you could ask if this is an option for you?

I did try the Lactose Free and the Gentlease.  But, I was also still breastfeeding at the time.  I quit breastfeeding and went with the soy all at the same time, so I don't know if she could have tolerated them without the breastmilk.  She has been eating cheese and mac & cheese and seems fine with the milk.

Both my boys did not tolerate any milk based formula and I had to cut out dairy while I nursed.  Cam couldn't even handle soy for several months.  Carson is great and big and strong and very bright, he was a soy baby.  Cam went to soy around 6 months finally and is now on soy milk as his acid reflux is still pretty bad and the whole milk was a concern for the ped.  Cam handles dairy okay, we just don't do too much and will gradually switch to whole milk when he's doing a little better.  I always check with the Dr. since some of those magazines will scare ya with their articles.  My boys thrived well on soy, I'm not worried and you shouldn't either.

Thank you for your comment.  Anna is growing fine.  She just started crawling and is babbling like crazy.  She has always been really healthy.  My DS had lots of ear infections and had to have tubes.  Anna has only had two and no other illnesses.  I don't see how soy can be that bad.  She seems pretty healthy!
