Confused - hCG Levels

by nt6148, Jun 28, 2006 12:00AM
I need some feedback regarding my hCG levels from someone. My doctor just seems to be surprised that they continue to rise... I think she expects me to miscarry. This is a surprise pregnancy - I was on birth control. I have no idea when I ovulated or when conception may have taken place. I am 41 years old with a 16 and 13 year old. Now that I have been given another chance at motherhood, I am so worried that things aren't going normally. I had never even heard of hCG levels until June 12.

6/12 =  50
6/14 =  80
6/16 =  150
6/22 =  872
6/26 =  2,323 + saw gestational sac

I think with the levels only going from 50 to 80 is what made your doctor think that you would probably miscarry.  However, after second test your levels (although rising slowly) have more than doubled every two days and that is what they like to see.  It's still hard to predict what could happen, but your levels are rising so that is a good sign.

If the levels stop rising so fast, or if they drop, then that is a bad sign.  Good luck!! When is your next ultrasound?

Seems pretty normal.  The accepted range is if the hCG number doubles in from 48 to 72 hours, when the number is below 1200.  Your first pair of numbers doubled in 70 hours, the second in 53 hours, the third in 56.7 hours and the final pair in 68 hours.  All of those are in the acceptable range.  (From 1200-6000, the accepted range for doubling time is in 72-96 hours.)  Maybe your doc is just so stunned that you got preggers that she is hedging her bets.

Thanks for the replies. My next ultrasound will be on July 3. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Besides worrying about keeping the baby, I am also worried about Downs. Pregnancy was so much easier when I was young, uninformed, and without the Internet.

I understand what you mean.  When it comes to pg complications, sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Oh -- they didn't give me any measurements on the sac. I also don't think she wants to give me any ideas on how far along I am yet. She did say that we might see a heartbeat on the next one, though. I am thinking that I am somwhere around six weeks...

From what I found out in my current pregnancy. When Hcg is around 2,000 it means you are probably at about 6 weeks (give or take a little). I don't think you should be worried yet, your levels look pretty good. Everyone's levels rise differently, but yours look to be doubling pretty good. Keep us posted. I also go for my next appointment on July 3rd, I'm 23 weeks now.

Hate to add a different question to this post, but how long does it take your hcg levells to drop to 0 after a m/c.

I'd guess about 5 weeks, based on seeing a sac but not a h/b and fetal pole yet.  Good luck!!!!!
