I have an appt. with a dietician on Thursday at 4:30 to finally get a diet for the gd. But I called my doc's office and drilled the nurse with questions because until I go, I am wondering about a lot. Well, she couldn't answer many, but did tell me the doc would only be checking my blood once a week. I would not be checking my own. So I asked her how I would know what would affect me and what wouldn't. Where my numbers were so close to normalNormal saline flush I may be able to eat things others couldn't, but I wouldn't know that if I don't know the affect on my blood after I eat it. She said that was a good question, but she didn't know. So last night at 7 my doc calls me (I thought that was nice). He tells me to calm down or he's gonna put me in the psych ward. I think I drive them a littleLittle noses decongestant Little tummys crazy with all of my worrying. He said that if I want a slice of pizza to have it, just don't wash it down with 3 jelly donuts. He said that he doesn't want me checking my own numbers. He'll do it once a week and if I have 2 good weeks, he'll give me a week off. I'm not sure if that means a week off from the diet or the blood test. Anyway, he said that because my numbers were so close to normalNormal saline flush there probably wouldn't be much to change in my diet. I asked if my diet would be catered to my numbers and he said no, to my height and weight. Well that doesn't make sense. Either they are going to treat me like I have full blown gd or not. Do any of you have any idea what he's talking about with this. I'm more confused now than before.
Thanks,
Debra
Is he just planning to do a c-section anyway? Maybe he doesn't care if the baby is a littleLittle noses decongestant Little tummys big if you aren't planning to deliver vaginally? I don't know...sounds weird.
Mine were c -sections and thats what i told them dont matter if he is big im having a c-section so dont worry about the diet--HA
Debra he said blood tests were more accurate, well u are using your blood when you test.
My OBGYN when he got the report sent me right to the endocronologist
I agree with the others, that is very strange! I have never heard of that. My #'s too were very close to normalNormal saline flush, so close that doctor looked twiceTwice-a-day last week to make sure that I did fail it because my #'s lately have been so good with my testing. And even with that she has me testing 4 times a day 3 days a week. I would think that if the monitors were not correct or close to it there would be alot of sick people running around. I know my monitor was $70 and my tests strips were $50 for 50 of them but now that I have to test only 3 days a week it isn't that bad. You may want to go to Wal-mart and pick a cheap one up and just test every now and then after eating certain foods to just see hw they affect you. I know if I ate pizza whew mine would be high. I do not see how he can test your sugar 1 time a week and make a diagnosis from that. Funny how doctors can be so different.
I know!!! That's what's driving me crazy. I'm gonna be very clear with the dietician about where I stand. My stepmom has type II diabetes and has been putting off buying the tester but said she would so that I could borrow it because she knows it's expensive. I'm gonna test myself and not tell him. How else will I know that what I'm eating is okay. If I don't check myself and his test results are not to his satisfaction, how will he know what to tweak. When I mentioned you guys to the nurse and how you all test yourselves, she said you all must have had much higher numbers than me. I knew that wasn't true, but didn't argue. You'd think all docs would be consistent. I'll hopefully get better info from the dietician. The first nutritionist that I called said that the diabetic center (where I am going) has you test yourself and she thought that was a real benefit. I'm gonna test no matter what! He can just try and stop me ;o)
That does sound weird I was only out .3 not even a whole number
and i was put on it. They do take your height and weight to figure out the diet But I tested my blood sugar my self 4/day and after a week I had to call all the numbers in, and appointment well they wanted every week but i was 2 hour drive away so I said Im only coming every second week with my Doctors appointment. You can buy a glucose monitor yourself I seen them at Walmart and they were only 9.00 its the strip themselves that cost alot.
I was gonna buy a monitor myself and he told me not to. He said I can't rely on them, that the blood test is all he'll go by. Why is he so different from the other docs?
that is kinda strange. did you try telling him it would help your own piece of mind to test? maybe he would be more supportive if he thought it would "mentally" help you. My doc has me only checking mine once a week now but in the beginning I had to test alot and my numbers from the glucose tolerance test were pretty close to normal too (but I wasn't pregnant when I failed mine). maybe you can get the dietician you see to help you gang up on him. either that or you could go and see an endocronologist on your own who can help you with the GD part and have you test your sugars.
just ask him if you can test them yourself for a week or so just for your own piece of mind...
I would definately test yourself. It surely is not going to hurt anything and he can not tell you not too. I think it will drive you crazy if you do not and end up not eating enough and that would not be good. I know it would me. I like to know where I stand. Good luck!
well the way i would have taken what he said was that you are soooo close to normal...he doesn't think you need to make drastic changes to your diet. meaning eat normal healthy foods and just try to lay off the baked goods and candy like 'jelly donuts'
and as far as you checking your sugars...he probably told you not to because he thinks you would worry yourself more by doing so. if you check it to close to when you eat you might get a higher number and freak and he doesn't want you to worry.
i'm sure your doctor has your best interest in mind..(most doctors don't call their patients personally)
good luck and try to relax

You are right. I know those are his motives. He wants me to stay calm above all else. I will be meeting with the dietician tomorrow and will have much more info then and that alone will make me feel so much better. I'll probably test myself for the first week just to get an idea of whether I'm eating the right things or not. Thanks for your input.
