Confused...when do I start giving solids to DD?

by Me2mommy2b, Feb 10, 2007 12:00AM
I got different responses from my regular pediatrician and GI specialist.  The GI says you can start feeding solids starting from 4 mos but my regular ped wants to wait until DD's at least 13 lbs.  DD is breastfed and I suppliment with formula 1-2 times a day.  Another question, what do you start with?  Fruits, veggies?  Thank you.

Hey! I started feeding DS solids at 4mo.. We started with rice cereal for one week.. Then oatmel the next week..then we did the veggies first and your supposted to feed them one kind for 3-4 days strait ( to make sure they dont have a reaction to it ) then do the next flavor for 3-4 days and so on.. But they say to start out with veggies cause the fruits are more sweet.. Thats what we were told to do by DS Dr. I hope this helps good luck with everything :)

I know! So many Dr.s say different things. It gets confusing. Our ped. told us that it's ok to start cerial at 4 months, but there is a slightly higher chance of developing allergies. and in most cases they don't need it that early. About 5 months is when we started cerial, and then at 6 months is when we slowly started other foods. The above poster is right, start out with one food at a time to make sure they don't develope allergies. If your baby seems to be satisfied without solids then there is nothing wrong with waiting till she is closer to 6 months. But definatly wait with everything other than rice cerial till she is about 6 months old. Their tummies still don't digest very well. And never give a baby under 12 months honey! It can make them very sick! go to www.babycenter.com they have a lot of good info on what to feed, when, how much, sleeping, etc. etc. It's a great site. Hope this helps

The new recommendation from the AAP and WHO is to breastfeed or formula feed exclusively until baby is 6 mos at which time solids may be introduced.

my ped says 6 months

their little digestive systems are just not ready that early

you may notice people who start earlier have kids who are sicker, kids who have reflux, all kinds of issues - the cells in their digestive tract are veryimmature

best of luck

my dd started food like i said just before four month close to 3 1/2 months and my dd is not sick does not have reflux.  just had 6 month check up and she is two months ahead of where she should be.  every baby is different talk to you ped and get his advice but your the mom.  trust your gut.  my baby is NEVER sick.  I have never had any problems with her.  Nope wait she had a cold when she started daycare the whole daycare had it.  That's just not correct babies get sick from other things too.  maybe some babies get reflux from eating and sick from eating early but they get those things from other things as well.

I don't put any credence in the weight recommendation. My ds is 3 mos old and over 16 lbs, he was 12 lbs before his 2 month birthday. I am of the school that exclusively nurses and then lets them experiment with rice cereal around 6 months or older. I did it with my other 2 boys and it worked well. I certainly would never advise starting it before 4 months at the very earliest but do feel it is better to wait. They get little to no nutritive benefit from solids during the first year, it needs to come from either breastmilk or formula.

I wanted to let you know that my son is very healthy and doesn't have any problems or allergies.. And he started everything at 4 mo.. How much does your daughter weigh now? If the ped. tells you its ok the go for it.. They arent going to tell you anything that you shouldnt do.. And my friend breastfeed her DD till she was 6 or 9 mo. and she started solids at 4-5 mo. and she to is very healthy.. I geuss if you feel it is ok the start 4-5 mo.. GOOD LUCK

I read that when they are double their birth weight its a good time to start solids I started my first dd at 4 months she was showing signs like watching us eat and still being hungry after her breastfeed or formula your baby will let you know my first dd is nearly 2 years old and never got sick im planning to start my 3 month old dd on solids at 4 or 5 months when she shows me the signs.

every baby is diffrent and if your child is ready for solids then start solids. i did maternity nurse training and on one occasion i asked the child nutrionist why they changed the solinds introduction from 6 months( in the uk)??? she said, the reason for that is that the babies are not fed very healthily from very young age and missing very important minerals and vitamins imoportant for their further development.if your baby is showing interest in food, and is constantly hungry- then you can start with solids.
good luck and enjoy the weaning.
