Could I Be Carrying Twins?

I'm curious - My supposed LMP was 1/02(although it was light). When I went to the OBG on 2/09 they drew my blood for HCG levels which I just found out were 18,218 - I was told I was VERY pregnant but not much else. My next appt isn't for another two weeks & I'm dying of curiosity. Could I have my dates wrong? My LMP prior was on 12/7 & I am very regular (26 day cycle)- but even going by that LMP it seems like my HCG is still high. Could I possibly be carrying twins? There is a history on my mom's side of the family (from her Grandmother) and my husband is an identical twin (although I hear that it's not proven that has anything to do with having twins yourself). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to seem silly mentioning my thoughts to my friends & family. Also, I am the proud mother of a one year old & didn't show with her until about the fourth month. I'm already showing with this pregnancy. Thanks for any input. =0)

I don't know about the twins thing but my co-worker had a period and then didn't and then did again and then didn't.  She took a test and it was positive.  She thought she was about 4 weeks along and due in July.  She went in and found out she's due in May!  You could be farther along, you could be having twins.  I guess it's too early to tell.

I just looked up my hcg with my last pg and at 7 weeks, my hcg was over 76,000 so if your LMP was the beginning of January hcg in the 18,000s isn't too high at all. Of course, only an ultrasound can confirm with this is twins or not.

I have heard that being able to have twins goes every other generation.  So if you grandmother was able to then it would be you next. Not sure if this is true but it has been so with my family.  Also it has nothing to do with your husband just your side of the family.

If your lmp was 12/7, an hcg of 18,000 would be a little low.  You would be a little over 11 weeks.  My lmp was 12/2, the last hcg they did a few weeks ago was at 112,000 if I remember correct.  I would guess your 1/2 lmp date is correct for that hcg level.  You are a little over 7 weeks which is the same as where my sister is.  Her HCG levels are in that range.

Normal values for HCG levels vary a lot (check out some levels on http://www.conceivingconcepts.com/learning/articles/hcg.html).
My levels were 52 (DPO13) and 156 (DPO15) this pregnancy and 112 (DPO13) and 337 (DPO15) when I had my twins. My friend (who has twins) had already over 700 on DPO13, so you see, it's hard to tell. Good luck with your pregnancy!

My mom is a twin so I have a chance of having twins (fraternal).  I was also on clomid with this recent pregnancy which increases the chances of twins.  I thought for sure I was.  My HCG levels at 3 weeks were 360 then at 4 weeks 11,860.  That was a rather large jump according to my doctor so he sent me in for an u/s thinking it was twins but no just one:)  Verified today:)

The myth that twins skip generations is not correct it is just that it would be in your genes. My cousins aunt's grandmother had two sets of twins her mother was a not twin and had two sets of twins and then the my cousin's aunt (who was one of the twins)had two sets of twins and then one of the twins had twins. Confusing I know but true.

With your DH being a twin the way I understand things makes no differance to your children...You must have the gene to release 2 eggs (fateral) or for your egg to split (identical), but like I said I am not 100% on the identical twin. Good luck and keep us posted.
