Cures for a miserable cold???

by fasoltmn, Mar 19, 2006 12:00AM
I'm just over 17 wks pregnant and have the most awful cold. I can't breathe and my throat is very sore. Does anyone have advice on what medications help with the stuffed up nose. I'm having a hard time sleeping because I can't breathe. I would normally take a sudafed, tylenol cold, or nasal spray, but don't think I can take them while pregnant. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Try drinking hot water with honey, lemon and peppermint.  You can use peppermint extract, or just drop in an altoid mint.  This won'e give you permanent relief, but it will help some.

Hello i know how you are feeling i am prengnat too and just got over a really bad cold myself. But if you want you can take Sudafed but it has to be the plain kinda and here where i live its only available at the pharmacy all you have to do is ask for it don't get the Sudafed PE kinda that will be bad you want the one with pseudoephedrine =) and as far as the sore throat i would take plain Robitussin (guaifenesin) but it can only be that ingredient... and you can take Tylenol because it has acetaminophen in it and thats ok to take while pregnant i would avoid the other drugs like advil or motrin and stuff like that because that can be harmful to your baby... and i know this is gonna sound like common sense but make sure you get plenty of rest and you drink lots of water it will clean out your system.. i am pretty sure you already know all this info but if not hope this helped...

You can take sudafed and you can take Benedryl. I get a terrible cold every pregnancy that lasts through most of the 1st trimester and have taken both of those pretty regularly during the cold and have 5 healthy children. The ob doctor told me to take them. Also you can take cough syrup but I never have taken that before so I am not sure which ones are ok.

Benedryl is great for helping you sleep too. Sudafed makes me jittery and I can't sleep while on it so I alternate depending on whether it is sleep time or wake time.

Tylenol is safe during pregnancy also.

Ask your doc for an RX med guaifen (spelled just like that). Both my pregnancies I had very bad nasal congestion and swore by those pills. Safe, they were prescribed by my OB himself. I know there are OTC's with this ingredient, but not just that, so you have to figure out what other things that are mixed are safe.

Just the script for guaifen is that and that medicine alone. Works pretty quick too, guess strong dose is why it's prescription only.

Best of luck and hope you get to feeling better!!!

Okay so this might sound icky, but i know that it works very very well.  If you take warm water and dissolve quite a bit of salt into it and then take a baby syringe (the blue ones that look like they have a ball on the end) and shoot it into your nasal passage, it will help drain it and get rid of what is left.  I used to get horrible sinus infections and that had made them go away.

Being pregnant puts added pressure when you are sick (as to the safety of any meds), that is why I always try the natural remedies first!  Try drinking orange/ cranberry/rasberry juice (all high in vitamin C).  Before you go to bed try to have at least one clove of fresh garlic (crush it and mix it with honey and lemon - that is how I do it) Do it for three days and you will be fine!  100% Natural and safe for you and your baby!
