DD's bm is very hard...

DD's bm is very hard...

Sorry for the gross topic but DD's bm has been very hard lately to the point where she cries when she goes (she'll be 8 mos in 10 days).  She's teething now and I noticed that every time as the new tooth is popping, she has the same problem.  She's on baby food now (carrots, squash, etc) and the carrots don't seem to help at all (today she ate two cans of it and still nothing).  I spoke to her dr about it and his only suggestion was to put dried prunes in boiling hot water for a few minutes and give her a teaspoon of that liquid three times a day.  Any other suggestions to loosen the bm??  Thank you.

My dd occasionally goes through the same thing, one time it was so bad I had to help get the poop out.  It was horrible!!!  I give her prune juice, i usually mix it in with a better tasting juice and add water.  I lso have used a stool softner called little tummies.  It really doesn't take much to work.  I don't give it to her often, only when i know it is really painful and there isn't time to wait for natural remedies to kick in.  It started about 8 or 9 months and now at 15 months, she is much better.  I think part of it is there lil tummies getting used to more than just formula or breast milk.  You can find the little tummies near the nylacon drops in drug store.  I hope that helps, I know it says on the bottle to consult your dr for children under 2, but my sil is a nurse and she said just to give her a small amount only when she really needs and it worked.

Good luck , i hope this helps

My ped recommends feeding peaches, plums or pears to help soften stool. I don't know if you have introduced those foods yet, but now may be a good time!

When my boys were babies, they had problems with bm.  The formula stopped them up so to speak.  I asked the dr. what I dcould do and he suggested putting about half a teaspoon of prune juice in the bottle with formula.  I would do it with 2 or 3 bottles a day and that would keep them regular without pain or constipation.

Instead of starting a new post I have a question?  My dd is the same way  I give her kayro (sp) in her bottle each time and her doc. said it was okay but someone said it cause problems could I give her prune juice to see if that helps her bm.  She will  be 4 months on the 15th do you think it is safe to try prune juice on her?  Thanks for any advice.

My three year old had chronic constipation as a baby, he was even prescribed lactulose at one point but it made him really sick as well as making him poop. His ped told me to use diluted prune juice. To get things moving I gave him 1/2 oz with 1/2 oz water and that usually worked. As it was so bad for him I had to give him 2 teaspoons of juice in 1oz of water daily as a preventative measure from 8 weeks old until he was eating fruit purees when I was able to stop the juice and just include prunes and pears in his diet.

Try the Gerber Prune & apple juice in the baby section from walmart.  My mil gave my dd some and she had two BM's that night and another the next morning.  I think she gave her one oz mixed with one oz of water.  Got things moving pretty quickly.  Some say that Kayro isn't safe due to the risk of botulism.

also white grape juice helps.  that's what my doc recommends over even prune juice, especially for the younger babies.  apparently it's a gentler remedy.

if the problem worsens during teething it could possibly be from Tylenol or the like if you're giving it.  but if its needed, then counteract the problem with diet if you can rather than have baby in pain.

always remember... bananas and rice bind, and apples and oatmeal loosen.  so if you know baby is gonna go thru a tough period due to teething, cut back the rice cereals and banana foods, and increase the apple sauce or juice and oatmeal cereal.
