Daycare director and swine flu

Daycare director and swine flu

Soooo.... this lady is well known for her outbursts of panic. However, she told me this morning she had been 'diagnosed' with Swine flu over the weekend. Ok, here's the deal. She is even WORSE than me with germs (yeah! it can get worse! lol), she told me about a week or so ago that her grandson (lives with her) was home vomiting and chest congested and 104 degree fever and possibly was the swine flu. She took him to the doctors that confirmed it was NOT the swine flu, rather just a bad cold.
My mom, last week was in bed... and I mean IN BED, because of a nasty NASTY cold..., when she started the fever and nasty coughing, I took her to the express care and they tested her... not the swine flu... rather just a bronchitis.
She's fine now... and while she was sick, Maddie was sick too... but she never developed fever, so I really just kept an eye on her and never took her to the docs. She is not coughing anymore and sleeping thru the night again... her sinuses are not draining green stuff anymore... she's over it. And so is my mom.

This morning, I dropped Maddie off at daycare and this lady (the director... same one who told me it's impossible to potty train a 17 month old baby) goes on to tell me she was sick on Friday (Maddie was home with my parents) and was diagnosed 'OVER THE PHONE' with the swine flu. That 'they' wouldn't even let her go to the office for testing.

I didn't get too alarmed since I know that it could be just a nasty cold, or a flu like my mom and Maddie had... or her grandson.... but then she told me her grandson is at home AGAIN, and now this time IT IS the swine flu.

Now, can you get DIAGNOSED by a doctor that just asks you symptoms over the phone with the stupid  swine flu??!?!?!?! It just makes me think something is not all that right in this whole ordeal.... I mean, yes, I worry about my little one being in direct contact with a person that is showing symptoms of a disease like that... but a the same time, I know there's a bug going around with the same symptoms that is NOT that pig's flu.

Argh... I guess I just needed to vent...
she's always telling me how BAD it is for Maddie to still be on the bottle... even when I tell her I MAKE SURE her teeth are brushed right after every bottle... she still tells me how wrong I did, and that I should have done this before... blah blah blah... yes, I know... now, lets find a SOLUTION! instead of pointing the finger!!!

She told me even when Maddie is going potty at home, that she was 'way too little' to even think about potty training her.... well... how about JUST TRY IT DAMMIT!!!!

Sorry, I'm a little fed up with her this morning.

I'm happy with the daycare over all, don't take me wrong, they take good care of them, and she loves it!... it's very clean and it has a preschool program... but there are somethings I needed to take out of my system today... ;)

Vent away, that is what we are here for. :)

Well, I really don't think you can be diagnosed swine over the phone, but I guess I could be wrong. (It was probably just a guess by the doctor since her grandson has it). As for the potty training, the daycare should go by your wishes and not make choice for YOUR child. That is the same with the bottle, whether they agree with it or not, it is YOUR child and YOUR choice and your wishes should be followed.

she is a liar... my nephew has /had swine flu, and we were all in contact with him 4 days prior for a birthday party, they nasal swabbed him and it tested + he was given tamiflu as was his sister as she just got out of the hospital after having bowel surgery, so as a preventative, so no YOU CAN NOT BE diagnosed over the phone, honestly vanessa she sounds like a real wing nut, furthermore

17 months is NOT to young to begin potty training, each child is differnt, I am a nurse not a day care provider and I even know that, I hope she is not charging you alot, because I really think this woman is clueless

V- I know around here they are assuming all cases with the symptoms are swine flu.  They will not let you come to the clinic (trying to stop the spreading of the virus)  However they can not be SURE it is the swine flu unless they do a swab.
If she even thinks she has the flu why is she at the daycare today????  She is exposing everyone around her.

actually, some physicians are making assumptions/ loose diagnosis over the phone because swine flu is so contagious- they don't want it in their office. In fact, didn't Andi mention in a thread just last week that her dr said she most likely has swine flu but did not want to see her for confirmation because of how contagious it is? I think that if you do not have any risk factors for complications and your symptoms are under control, they don't want to see you. They are only giving antivirals to people with high risk factors for complications, so an official diagnosis wouldn't change the way she is treated anyways. Not best practice from a diagnostic perspective, but prudent given how quickly this thing is spreading. Think of how you'd feel if you went to the dr for a physical and the person across the room was hacking with the flu. It has been shown to spread from person to person with no direct contact- i think it can travel by air 10 feet.

by the way, they will do a swab test to see if it's a flu, but they are not testing most cases for specific diagnosis of swine flu. I think it will come up as positive for Influenza A, and they assume it is swine.

They are doing the same around here, but I think it adds more fuel to the fire sometimes. And you're right, if the doctor did "diagnose" her over the phone, why is she in the daycare??? If you suspect you have it, or told that you have it, stay home. :)

I know! that's what I thought, and that's why I pretty much blew off her converstion in the morning. She was going on and on about how bad she felt, blah blah blah and that now that she was on tamiflu shew as not contagious anymore... and I'm thinking 'well, now you might not.. but how about when you didn't know you had it!' they say that a person with symptoms, or even before them, can be highly contagious...

Argh... thank you so much for letting me vent and 'listen' to my rant. She is nice and all, but sometimes she's a little funky.

I called today to tell her that Maddie had used the potty several times yesterday and that we could officially call this 'potty training' since I believe she is ready. She gets the idea of the potty and now she does it without problem!... I told her to sit her in the potty thruout the day and guess what?! she told me she did in the morning and that she went potty!!!! I was so happy, since she never did it in a toilet! just her little potty... so, now finally, it looks like they are working with me.

About the bottle, I am putting juice with yogurt (and a squirt of milk) in her sippy and see if she takes that... gradually I'll start putting more milk than juice and yogurt... see if that works! =)
She'll be diaper free, binky free (she is ALMOST binky free now)... but still drinking from her 'ba ba'... lol

Oh lawd....

Oh, and her grandson wasn't diagnosed either... just her over the phone... the kid is just sick and she didn't send him to school... she just assumed they both have it....

I'm sorry but I call BS.

I mean yes, this thing is spreading and all that... but you can have regular flu or a nasty cold and now people are FREAKING out about the swine flu.... I really don't know what to think.... if she had it, like someone above mentioned, then why is it that her daycare is open today??? .... bunch of BS.

its funny...a headline on msnbc today was something like "swine flu makes a foolproof excuse for slackers"
Sounds like maybe they are right.

the bottom line, if a dr diagnosis over the phone.. and does not want his waiting room filled with " swine flu" patients I would find a new doctor, would you want a dr who would do that, that would be as bad as a dr saying your having a miscarriage thats why your bleeding dont bother coming to my office.. UM thats just not cool.. sorry

Hey Izzy is 21 months and we just quit the bottle 2 weeks ago!!  To tell you the truth I wouldn't have minded her having it still as it did provide her with some comfort but I had the opportunity to wean her and we did it.  My sisters had their kids off the bottle at 12 months which to me is sooo young!  But I don't care, her teeth are fine and I feel happy that I weaned her so gently!  Don't feel bad about the bottle...each child is different and if it gives her some comfort who cares!  Besides, I haven't even sat Izzy on the toilet yet - look how great Maddie is doing!  If she still needs a little bottle fix - no big deal!!

As far as the swine flu is concerned there are soooo many viruses going around right now.  Izzy had 2 almost back to back.  I don't think anyone knows for sure if they have had it unless they were directly tested for it!!  I read yesterday that you may even have only one symptom of the swine flu and no fever and still have it so how can you distinguish between a cold virus and H1N1 unless you are tested!!!!

Well, Rhett still has a bottle for bed time and when he gets up. He is 20 months and I'm in no hurry to break him from it. Logan was off the bottle by 18 months, and Kennedie,.....I don't even remember. I don't know why people make such a big deal out of stupid ****.  When I go to get Rhett's bottle for bed time he does a dance!! How can I not give it to him when he does a happy dance????
