Declining quantitative HCG

Declining quantitative HCG

I am so glad I found this forum:  If someone would please respond, this is what I have going on... I had a miscarriage back on Oct 23, 2010.  I took an at home preg test before Thanksgiving- since I was expecting my period to start by then - it was negative.  Then, I took another one a week after Thanksgiving and it was positive.  I went to my first OB/GYN appt on Monday 1/3/11 and my HCGs were ~25,0000.  She said I should be 10wks, and it didn't look good.  Then, the ob/gyn started me on progesterone vag supp & I had to retest yesterday [2 days later] and now its ~18,000.    The nurse just called to tell me to discontinue to progesterone & to do another blood test on 1/13/11.   The doctor said that they don't think it's viable and will wait till the HCGs decrease to <2, hoping I will pass it.  Is this a normal thing?  Or should I really just prepare for the worst??  Any helpful words or similar experiences to help my husband & I to get through this...

Numbers dropping is never a good sign.  However, I would call and request an ultrasound. If you see a hb, there is hope, if not you will know one way or another.

Thank you for responding.  No hb found 1/3, we did ultrasound on that day.  My husband & I have accepted the worst at this point.  I was hoping HCGs were somewhat a fluctating thing- but it's not- as I'm learning.   We will try again, once I 'pass it' or d&c if need be.  Thank you again, babies are truly a blessing to be treasured...
