Diflucan (Fluconazole) effects 14 weeks pregnant

Hello to everyone;

I ma pretty scared and i would like to aks you a question. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am 14 w pregnant and I have mild east infection. I visited my Doc yesterday and she prescribed to me Diflucan 150 one pill. i asked her if that is fully safe to take it and she said without thinking YES but that if i want she will give me into - vaginal products. I said i want what is safer for baby. She said that it doesn't matter that it is safe . She said she want to prevent incompetent cervix complication that my sister had and it may be genetic so it is why she give me Diflucan.

I trusted her and took it and later I only read that it is C safety for pregnant women and studies on rat showed deformations as well.

Me and my sister were born almost blind with genetic deformations in eyes.

I am scared. Not only scared but as well angry as i asked her straight and she didn;t tell me the truth what i was supposed to know to take risk or not. Definitly i would not take that risk. I had very mild infection that could be maybe treated different way.

Do you have an experience with this. i feel so helpless... Silvia

I have the same situation as you do. I was asked to take two pills of diflucan in 3 days (150g each) at the 5th week pregnancy. I was not aware I was actually pregnant. I am very worry about it now and thinking if I should let go my baby. Can you tell me how is your baby now? Is everything alright so far?

Hi there: I have taken 150mg of diflucan twice before I knew I was pregnant. That is during my 4th and 5th week. Once I knew I was pregnant, I am freaking out since then. I am reading conflicting stories. I inadvertently took it and now I worry that I might have harmed my baby. Please help me out.

I do not know if Diflucan caused any problems with my baby but I took it right before I got pregnant (not knowing I would get pregnant) - within 3 days of conception. Unfortunately, my baby was not okay. She had a severe chromosomal abnormality. I went to the doctor and asked about Diflucan being the cause - given that it is a Category D drug and the FDA says NOT to taking while conceiving or pregnant. She said it should be fine that the drug should not cause chromosomal abnormalities. That being said, I do not think they know.  The only way they would know would be to test this theory by giving the drug to women pre-conception.  What they do know is that high doses cause birth defects. When I was pregnant I used a natural home remedy to cure my yeast infection (greek plain yogurt) and it worked after only three days.  Unfortunately, my baby's abnormality was too severe and it was too late for her.  My suggestion is do not take Diflucan if you can avoid it.  Though there is no proof of causality, why take the chance. There are other things you can do for yeast infections like vaginal creams etc. that are Category C drugs and not Category D.  The doctor may have been right and the abnormality had nothing to do with the Diflucan but I assure you I will NEVER take it again even in the off chance that that was the cause.  Why take the risk with your baby since there are other things that could work.  If nothing else works then you would need to weigh the severity of the infection with the risk. But I would not trust doctors just because they are doctors. They do not know everything. In fact they may not know that much at all, given the history of medicine when it comes to pregnancy.  I hope everything is perfect with all of your baby's and that the Diflucan has no effect whatsoever.

I have a yeast infection and am trying to get pregnant. Today, the on-call doctor prescribed me one dose of 150 mg. By the time I got home from the pharmacy, my doctor called me (after hours) just to tell me NOT to take it, since we are not sure if I am pregnant. She said its unknown if it will do any damage. My suggestion, for those of you that have not taken it, why risk it? For those that have taken it, your doctor must have weighed the options and felt it was safe.
I wish you all safe pregnancies and healthy babies!

I've had to take 100mg diflucan every day for the past 4 weeks, I have 2 weeks left. I came down with thrush in my mouth and throat and was diagnosed with systemic Candida infection. I was aware of the side effects, but needed the medication anyway, as the infection in my mouth and throat was preventing me from being able to eat or drink. I am now 27 weeks and seeing a perinatologist to assess if any damage has been done to baby's bones.
According to studies, there is a risk for birth defects if more than 400mg is taken in the first trimester. No birth defects were found to occur even when it was taken in doses up to 1600 mg daily over several weeks during the second and third trimesters.
In the second and third trimesters, if taking an extended course, you put the baby at risk of delayed bone ossification which could cause bone warping and brittleness.

I had bacterial vaginosis when I was 4 months pregnant and took an antibiotic for it.  After I was finished with the antibiotic, I ended up with a yeast infection.  I tried the monistat and it didn't work, so I called the doc and he prescribed me the one dose of diflucan. That knocked it out right away.  Now I'm 32 weeks pregnant, just went to the doc today because I thought I had another yeast infection. Sure enough, I do.  He gave me the diflucan again, but this time in 2 doses, 1 to take today and the other in 72 hours.  I have total trust in my doc that he is doing the right thing.  I am just praying that with only 8 weeks left, I won't have another one!  I have never in my 34 years had a yeast infection until I got pregnant with my 2nd child, so this is very frustrating and thank god he prescribed me the diflucan.  Hopefully I've helped a little!

Its fine, my son is fine.  No complications during pregnancy and he's a happy healthy 19 month old.  Do not worry about it.  Just use monistat now that you know you are pregnant.

I also took diflucan and didn't know I was pregnant.  I took 150mg and then another 150mg 2 days later.  I was about 1 week past conception when I took it.  My doctor said I shouldn't worry about it but I'm having a hard time!  When every website says not to take it I can't help but worry that it could have an effect on my baby.

I agree with Mami...my doc wouldn't give me diflucan while pregnant, but said the 7-day monistat was okay.  They said I had a yeast infection (found late in pregnancy when doing the group B strep) but I had no symptoms...told me I didn't have to take if I wasn't having symptoms as everyone has a certain amount of yeast anyway.  Opted not to take anything anyway to be safe, and everything was fine...if I'd have had symptoms I would have done the 7-day.

Ask your sister...good luck!

I wouldn't take the diflucan.  I had a yeast infection and I was 4 weeks pregnant and didn't know.  My doctor said it wouldn't have any effect but not to take it again if I have a yeast infection.  I believe it's safe to take the 7 day monistat.  I would double check with your sister though.

I just left my doctor's office aboyut 15 minutes ago. I am 18 weeks pregnant and have been having a gross discharge (thick, yellow and plentiful)....my doc said that it could either be a yeast infection or bacteria vaginosis...he prescribed to me Diflucan for the yeast and Flagyin for the vaginosis......i am scared to take these pills but i presume that if he prescribed them to me knowing that I am pregnant it would be preffectly safe for the baby. My sistaer is a doctor so just to be on the safe side I am going to get her opinion. hope this helps

Thanks for sharing your experience. But still I think doctor should tell you possible risks not just tell you that everything is ok , take it... I think pregnant women should have right to know the truth and then to decide.

I hope everything will be fine. I wish a lot of health to your babies!!!

I too took it while pregnant.  My son was born healthy and he will be 3 next month.

It is up to you, but your doctor is right, the benefits do far outweigh the risk..

Best Wishes,

Amanda

I had two yeast infections while pregnant with my son.  I took the pill form of diflucan.  He is a healthy three year old.  I was more comfortable with the pill form because I really didn't want to insert anything vaginally.  You should be fine taking it.

Category C is still allowed in women, it is a risk vs benefit situation.
