Does it hurt to take OTC meds during pregnancy?

Does it hurt to take OTC meds during pregnancy?

I have been trying to get pregnant for 1 1/2 years.   Every month I practically have myself convinced that I am pregnant and then my period finally comes.  Recently it has come every 32 days.  I'm currently on Day 37 and have not started.  I of course could say that I have all the syptoms (symptoms) of pregnancy, but they all could be related to my period coming.  Anyway, I have a cold and took some Sudaphed, Chlorapheniramine, and Robitussin.  If I am pregnant, I'm about 3 or 4 weeks.  Would taking sudaphed hurt anything?  I can't breathe and need relief.  I also take Zyrtec everyday.

definitely consult your doctor before taking otc meds during pregnancy.  It differs on opinions and your specific circumstances.  what may be safe for someone else may not be safe for you.  best wishes.

Sudafed is okay in pregnancy, so is guafenisin, dextromophan (both found in robitussin) and tylenol. You can always ask your doctor for a list of safe meds if you are TTC. Also, site like babycenter.com also has a list on it.

Hi Bandbaby, I would say you are probably okay, I know zyrtec is okay, I took that myself while pg. , I am not sure about sudafed, I can't remember if that was one that was on the approved list of med's you can take while pg. If you still are feeling bad call your ob's office and ask them what youcan take. Have you taken a HPT yet? I wish you the best of luck!! Kendra

I still highly recommend consulting your physician first.  Although there are some otc meds people say are safe during pregnancy, there are some that are really not recommended.  At the very least keep your physician in the loop.  I am a nurse and personally I would only feel safe taking tylenol and tums during pregnancy without my physicians knowabouts.  I would rather err on the side of caution.

Just to clarify, I was also a nurse and am a high risk pregnancy. I doubt there are many women who have poured over more books or consulted more doctors on this subject as I have : )

It is always wise to talk to your doctor, but I can tell you from experience and from my education that the meds I have listed above are safe in pregnancy in moderation.

No offence meant here, but if you are a nurse you should know more than anyone that you should ALWAYS consult your physician.  I am sure you've read a wealth of info and such, but each person and each pregnancy is unique.  I would hate to have someone think it's ok to take something because they read it from someone on a message board without consulting THEIR physician.  Sorry if I came off the wrong way, but beleive me, it's VERY serious.
