Drying up milk

Drying up milk

HELP!  I stopped breast feeding my son at 10 months old.  He is now 25 months old and I still have milk.  And it is not just if I express it.  It actually still leaks.  I have asked several doctors for help and they have no answers.  I know there was a medication they used to give back in the 90's that worked wonderfully but for reasons unknown to me the FDA pulled it.  I have been trying to research the medication to see if I could possibly get it from Mexico and see why it was pulled but I am having trouble finding out the name of it.  Does anyone out there remember what it was called?

Try contacting an herbailst.  When my sister-in-law's newborn died her midwife (who is also an herbalist) gave her some herbs and homeopathic remedies to help her milk dry up and they seemed to work.  Also, perhaps you could try accupuncture.

Thanks for responding.  I found some info last night that sage might help so I'm gonna check that out today.  I hadn't thought of accupuncture.  I'll try anythig!  This is making me crazy.

If the FDA pulled a drug, there may be a good reason.

You can leak for a long time after stopping breastfeeding, but if its been this long, I'd insist on a workup for pituitary tumors or other reasons for galactorrhea.

If nothing shows up, great.  But I'd want to be sure it was nothing serious.

I agree with peek. It can be something as simple as an imbalance in hormones. If it is a pituitary tumor I can guarantee you that they are 99.99% benign. Have your doctor run some lab work.

I actually had the lab work done about three months ago.  All is normal. So you can see why I'm frustrated.  I don't know what else to do.

Did you have an MRI to rule out a pituitary tumor?
This may sound way out there, but have you tried over the counter antihistamines? Doctors usually tell lactacting women to stay away from them because it can dry up there milk.

They may need to repeat lab work one more time.  Sometimes things change.

If nothing else is truly "wrong", it may be something you just have to live with.  Tight bra, cool packs to the breasts, no squeezing the nips to see if the milk is still coming out, etc etc.

Not fun, but if there is nothing causing it, it may just take more time.  Hopefully it will stop at some point.

I go back to the doc next week (post hysterectomy check) so I will ask about a possble MRI and a redo on the labs.  It just doesn't seem right that it is taking so long.  And there are times when I leak large amounts.  It doesn't seem to be related to any particular stimulus and complete lack of stimulus, tight bra and being very careful for MONTHS didn't help.
Although I did have a period of about 4 weeks that seemed a lot better right before my surgery.  Now that I think about it, I was having a lot of sinus trouble at the time and was on antihistamines.  My sinus' are acting up again so I guess it won't hurt to give that a shot.

Hmmm.....interestingly enough, a pituitary tumor puts pressure on the optic nerve and can cause blindness if not treated and it also puts pressure on the sinuses, so some people tend to think that they have an infection when in reality it is the tumor causing the sinus pain. I'm not sayiny that this is what you have, but it is something that should definitely be looked into. I'm glad you have a follow-up visit with your doctor.

Could be causing my migraines and visual disturbances too.  Thanks for the heads up.  I'll check it out.

WOW, I must say, you do have a lot of symptoms pointing to that! Good luck.
