ECTOPIC PREGNANCIES

i have had two ectopic pregnancies and was wondering has anyone ever had this many and still was able to have a normal pregnancy. i have had one in my left and right tubes and my doctor wants me to get both tubes removed . what do i do i am not getting my tubes removed because i believe god is the only one who can decide that. the doctor has told me she is afraid i will get pregnant in my tubes and will not know and it might rupture. i am still dealing with my losses one in january and the other in july and i am just scared.

I'm sorry for your losses, and I can relate. Although I've only had one ectopic, I had a miscarriage 5 months prior to that. Take this one step at a time, okay? You may not have to lose either tube. See what your doctor's next step is. I would certainly want at least an HSG before considering removing either tube. You're not alone- so many of us here have experienced losses in one form or another. Also, the methotrexate can make you feel "blah" in general, which does nothing to help your mood.

You might also ask your doctor for a referral to a fertility specialist before you even consider removing your tubes. Insurance should cover this because it is a special circumstance (and if they don't, my fs has office visits for $80.00). There may be several options to you and a fertility specialist, rather than your obgyn, is the best one to advise you on them.

You are your best advocate, so if you are not sure about what your doctor is telling you, get a second opinion.

Oh yes, there are women who go on to have normal pregnancies after 2 ectopics. Consider signing up for the yahoo group that I posted, because there are MANY women there who have had successful pregnancies after 2 or more ectopics.

You can have a pregnancy without it getting stuck in the tube after an ectopic, especially if you had methotrexate, which is used especially because it does preserve the tube (as opposed to surgery which leaves scars).  I would go ahead with the HSG, and if they find a lot of dangerous scarring in the tube that had surgical treatment instead of the methotrexate, if it were me I would seriously consider having just that one removed or at least tied, so as not to ever have to worry about an ectopic on that side.  But I'll bet your tube that had the ectopic that was treated with the methotrexate is clear.  It is then your job to stay very alert to possible future ectopics, by having an ultrasound as early as it is possible to see anything after you get a positive home test, but that is not hard to do.  Good luck!

Iwill post an update on monday about my doctor's visit and I have seen a specialist and the first thing she said was to remove both of my tubes. My obgyn wants me to keep them and try again. The specialist I have wants me to try ivf after my tubes are removed. thanks for the yahoo website i think it will be very helpful and i thank all of you for the words of encouragement.

Has your doctor done any tests to check the condtions of your tubes? Either an HSG or laproscopic (not the surgery, but just to take a look)? Were your ectopics treated surgically or with methotrexate?

There are a few of us on here that have experienced ectopics. And, I belong to a yahoo group that has been very informative for me:

I think you should stick with your doctor for now. I don't know why the specialist wants to remove both tubes without checking their condition first. As far as how long to wait, I would certainly wait until you have an HSG or lap to check both tubes. You need to know if one or both is blocked before you TTC again. Another issue is the methotrexate. I've read conflicting opinions regarding metho and TTC. The drug itself is out of your system fairly quickly, but it will affect your body's ability to absorb folic acid, even after the drug is out of your body. I posted a link below that says it's best to wait 3 months after metho treatment before TTC again. However, that opinion is based on long-term use of it (like for cancer) and not short term (1 or 2 doses) use. It's hard to be patient, but you must be. Getting pg again before having your tubes checked could result in another ectopic.

I want to thank you for talking with me because i feel so alone right now. Monday my obgyn said that when my levels go down she will do a hsg to see if the tubes are blocked and that sometimes by doing that test with the dye might move some of the scar tissue if there is some. This being my fourth I am not sure if my relationship will live through this one. I don't try to but I feel like I am pushing everyone away from me. I was thinking about going to talk to a psychiatrist because I work with babies for a living and when I am holding the babies I cry and think about my four babies that my boyfriend and I have lost. You are very strong I wish I had half of your strength.

I'm sorry that your tube ruptured, but that has nothing to do with the methotrexate. Perhaps your doctor should have surgically removed the pregnancy, but that's your dr's fault, and not the injection.

I agree the methotrexate does make you feel an incredible amount of cramping but I only bleed for three days and not very heavy. Itmakes you feel very yucky. Your doctor was supposed to check the size before giving you the medicine. I was in such a rush to ttc that i haven't given myself time to heal. I don't know how to stop and put my life back together. my boss fired me because i was on bed rest too long and i lost my apartment and now i am about to lose my car. I just wonder if other people feel the way i do like i have no control over my life and i need to feel like i can control some part of my life or i think i might lose my mind. my ex and i were together for nine years and i just feel like such a failure because i can't hold a baby to term this is the fourth baby that we have lost and i don't know what to do.

I had a tubal pregnancy on the left tube. It was horrible. They gave me the shot mexatrace (sorry if a mispelled). I do not recommend this shot. A couple of days later my co-worker had to call my OBGYN and the ambulance. I was in so much pain and I was bleeding a lot. I was taken straight to the operating room. When I woke up I was told they had to remove the tube because it had burst and I was bleeding alot internally. They had to give me a tranfusion of blood.

My OBGYN was concern about the other tube so he schedule me to get a hystersalpingogram this is when they put a dye in your uterus this test tells them that the tube is open or closed and the shape of the uterus. This test proved that my other tube was open.

Hope this help.

P.S. this test is uncomftorable and after the test you might feel cramping.

Sorry I missed this, but I sometimes forget to check older threads. The hsg test has been known to "clean out" the fallopian tubes for many women. It won't affect scar tissue, but there are cilia (little hairs) that line the tubes. The dye goes "whoosh" thru there and can clean things up. The test will also give your doctor information about your endometrium and the shape of your uterus.

I'm sorry you're having a hard time, and talking to a counselor might be a good idea. The only reason I have strength now is because my ectopic was a year ago, and my m/c was 5 mos. prior to that. Feel free to email me if you want to talk. My email addy is the username I have here @yahoo.com

It gets better with time. I still have my moments...just had one yesterday, actually. But overall, it gets better.

I can't believe you were fired from your job! How long had you been there? Was it more than a year? My goodness, you have a lot going on right now! So, did you and your BF just break up? I know you're in between jobs, but see if you can find a counselor that will charge you on a sliding scale. Whenever I felt overwhelmed to the point of losing it, I asked my doctor for Xanax. I know it's not a cure-all, but it has helped me through some rough times. Your last ectopic was less than a month ago, so you're still grieving. Remember that, and just take it one day at a time. You will get through this.
