Early sono and miscarriage

by capybara, Dec 07, 2006 12:00AM
Hi there I am new to this site and so far I have found it to be of great help. This is my problem I am 41yrs old and the mom of a cute 3yr old . My LMP was 100906 my periods are always on the dot! I had a pos preg test on nov 9th went to DR's office blood work numbers raising but still have cramps no bleeding. went in for sono on 1206 they see fetal pole but no HB dr claims HB should be present by now . See when I was preg with daughter they said the same thing and they even scheduled a D&C  husband asked me to refuse it and we did and tada! here is my Dolores.
They insist that this is not a viable pregnancy and I decided to weigh it out and pray for a positive outcome. Is it possible that it is too early for HB to show on sono? DR claims I am 7wks and that this pregnancy is 99.9% lost. I need some advice from others going through the same thing! I have been very stressed lately and to top it off I have finals coming up in the next 2 wks (yes, mom is back in school) .Last time I spoke to Dr she gave me the impression that she was rather upset at my choice , actually she is a second opinion and she is actually a NP not and MD the first Md I sent out the door as I sensed her to be very negative , right out the door she assured me that due to my age I would very unlikely be able to conceive as pregnancy at my age was nearly impossible. Anyway I feel really depressed and neglected by my DR's as now all they told me is that if I do not want to go ahead with the D&C they give me only 3 wks and if miscarriage does not occur then they'll have to do a DC no blood tests to see #'s

i would wait as long as you could too. with my first pregnancy a very similar thing happened to me except i didn't have any cramping or bleeding or anything it was a ruitine u/s and they saw the baby and yolk sac and no h/b i had a d&c right away and now i wish that i would have waited. i did however wait for this pregnancy i was having some cramping and spotting and my hcg levels were not doubling so i went for an u/s at 6 weeks 2 days and all the tech saw was an empty yolk sac and gestational sac dr told me i would m/c and i should have a d&c i refused went back a week later and they saw the baby and yolk sac but no h/b he then suggested another D&C but i waited then a week after that is when they found a nice strong h/b and i am now 32 weeks pregnant. good luck to you

I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks, 2 days.  No yolk sac, no fetal pole, no heart beat.  My doctor tells me that it looks like I'm off on my dates.  I assure him I'm not and he tells me to expect a period in a few days and sends me for blood work.  Hcg levels rise, but don't double, and I'm told that they are still in the "normal" range.  They do another transvaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks exactly.  No yolk sac, no fetal pole, no heart beat.  I ask how that can be if my hcg levels are considered "normal".  He tells me that the hcg levels are taken from the placenta and that the placenta hangs on for a while after the baby stops developing.  He suggests a D&C and I tell him I don't want one--I want to wait and let my body do what it needs to do.  He offers me Cytotec, to contract my uterus and "help things along".  I tell him I don't want it.  I go home to wait to miscarry.  I don't start bleeding or cramping for another 12 days and at 9 weeks, 5 days he sends me for another ultrasound because he's concerned--he tells me that if a miscarriage doesn't complete in a timely manner, infection can set in, so he wants to see what's going on.  I go for the ultrasound and the technician looks very confused, looks and me, flips a switch, and we hear a heartbeat.  Completely normal ultrasound with measurements matching my original dates.  I went on to have an amnio and all is well and she's a girl.  I'm now 28 weeks pregnant.  Oh, and I'm 42.

If you can safely do so...I'd wait.

It really ticks me off to see that doctors have no regard to your opinion.  It doesnt matter how much they believe they are right.  If you dont want to do something that should be respected.  YOU are paying THEM.  THEY work for YOU!.  so.. Wait as long as you need to wait.  As you can see from the previous posters, there are many people who are diagnosed "doomed to miscarry" and go on to have healthy pregnancies.    I would tell any woman who hasnt seen a fetal pole to wait until they do or until you hit 12 weeks.  There have been too many D&C's performed on pregnancies that could have been normal.. Its very sad.

Good luck and i hope your bean can grow big!!

Good day to you all and thank you very much for the words of encouragement! I  have decided to patiently wait for nature to take it's course . I called Dr's office to DEMAND blood work at least 3 times a week AND an ultrasound at this point they have told me that they will consult with my Dr and call me back . In the mean time today I woke up with a strong urge to pee but when I went it was a tiny stream . I am beggining to suspect that maybe I have a UTI!? also My breast are very tender and they are sort of tingling . This gives me hope that perhaps the pregnancy is progressing! We did not plan for  this baby but I would love to have it and this way  my Lola won't be an only child as I am.. it's soo lonely!

I went in for an ultrasound today--I'm 6 week 2 days--I have been extremely ill with nauseau and they were concerned about my weight loss.  However when they conducted the ultra-sound they size of the fetus was right on track however the heartbeat was very slow (52 beats per minute)--they tell me we have a 30-70 chance--anybody out there have any positive info to share???

I just went to the doctor today and was also disappointed! I was told that I am measuring seven weeks, with yolk sac and gest sac, but no heartbeat. THe doctor wanted me to schedule a D&C for Wednesday-two days later- but I feel that I need to wait and get a second opinion because I feel they could be wrong and maybe my little bean just isn't ready for heartbeat yet!  I say hang in there and have hope, I also agree with an earlier post that there are probably too many D&C's performed without confirmation.
A baby is a work of nature, and we should always remember that nature has a way of taking its own course!
