Eggs in pregnancy

by kelley-ann, May 16, 2004 12:00AM
I have heard that you have to be extra careful whaen you eat egs in pregnancy. I was just wondering which types are ok to eat. Is it ok to eat scrambled eggs as these to not contain a runny yolk?

I'm curious about this myself now that you ask. I've never heard anything about there being restrictions on eggs during pregnancy so you've sparked my interest. Anyone know?

Its got something to do with contracting salmonela (salmonella), if we eat under cooked eggs our immune system is strong enough to deal with it, but the babys immune system is not fully developed so it can make them ill. I was just wondering what types of eggs are ok.

The only thing I've heard about eggs is that pregnant women who eat them are much more likely to experience morning sickness.  Beyond that, you'd probably have to ask your doctor!

Eggs are fine to eat as long as they are hard cooked. No sunny side up eggs with runny yoks and no poached eggs with soft centers. Also, there are now pastuerized eggs now availabel that are supposed to be better to eat, but you still have to hard cook all your eggs. I eat eggs nearly every day and while I had morning sickness in my first trimester, I never noticed any difference when I didn't eat eggs for a few days.
