Empty Gestational Sac at ~5.5 Weeks

Hope someone out there has had a similar experience and can offer some info to me.  I had a miscarriage in January 2006 and to my delight, found out I am pregnant again.  I guessed I was about 5 weeks this past Sunday.  My HCG levels are fine but my progesterone is a bit low (13.6).  On Sunday, I began spotting lightly and went in for an U/S on Tuesday.  There was a gestational sac visible but it was empty.  he doctor said there is still a chance that it may develop more over the next week since I have long cycles (33 vs. the usual 28) and has called me back for another U/S in a little over a week.  He also prescribed Prochieve 8% gel which I have been applying twice a day for 4 days now.  I am very hopeful; my question is, has anyone had this kind of situation with light, consistent spotting, lower progesterone levels, and an empty gestational sac?  Has everyhting turned out alright in the end or am I hoping for nothing?  I'd really appreciate any help or guidance.  Thanks so much.

Hang in there.  A friend of mine had the same thing and everything turned out fine.  Her doctor told her that many times they don't see anything besides the sac until after 6 weeks.  Your levels seem high so you have a good shot.

Hi there! It's very important that your HCG evels are fine. Because usually they are the best inidcator if sth goes wrong + it's really hard to see anything before 7 weeks, so don't give up hope, stay positive and wait for your next u/s. Best of luck!

i wouldn't worry about it the same thing happened to me i was spotting a lot only my hcg levels were not doubling and i was suppose to be 6 wk 2 days and when they did the u/s they said the yolk and gestational sac where there and there was no baby and i was only measuring 5 wk 4 days. i went back a week later for a repeat u/s and they saw the baby with a nice strong h/b i am now 11 wks. 5 wks is very early and my dr doesn't do u/s untill his patients are atleast 6 wk b/c usually all you see at a 5 wk u/s is the sac. hope all goes well and remember anything can happen atleast your hcg levels are good.

dont worry about anythign hon, im sure you are fine.  It is very unlikely to see anything at all that early on in pg.  Especially since you say you have long cycles and do not know when you ovulated.  You could be a bit earlier on than you thought, and at this point a few days makes a huge differenc.  I know it is hard to stay positive, but in your case I dont see any rason to be otherwise.  Congratulations and sticky baby dust to you.  BTW, why is your doc having you back so soon.  Usually they like to wait till 7 or 8 weeks since it is so hard to see anythign before then.

Some dr's will not see a pregnant woman until 8 weeks so they are sure by then to see the sac and a heartbeat. Hang in there it is just too soon to see anything. :)

Good luck and try not to worry.  I was supposedly 5 weeks on 07/10 and had a vaginal sono and my HCG levels were 2695 and the DR saw nothing.  Then on 07/12, my levels were 6000 and he thinks he saw 'what could maybe a sac' but still isn't sure.  I'm getting another sono on 07/15.  I'm hopeful that sometimes 5 weeks, however many days, is just really soon and things change within a few days.  Keep the faith.

When I had my ultrasound at 5 weeks, 6days. We did see something, BUT my Dr. did make the comment about the ultrasound tech. She said it is very unusual to be able to see something at this early of a stage, so the tech must have just been really good. Hang in there and just be patient. It is amazing what just a couple of days can do.

I also sometimes had a cycle of 31 days and sometimes 28. I went in at 5w4d and saw an empty gestational sac measuruing 8mm. I was so nervous. When I went back 10 days later there was the baby and heartbeat and I was 6w4d so I obviously only ovulated on the 18th day of my cycle which is late which meant that at my first scan I was only around 5 weeks. Hang in there... I know the wait is hard but I am sure everything will be fine ;)

Hey there,  thanks to you all for the support!  It really has made me calm down and feel more sane.  I seemed to have stopped spotting, it's only there once in a while and i believe it's due to irritation from applying the progesterone gel.  It appears after I apply the gel and then is gone for the rest of the day.  I think the reason my doc is seeing me aerlier than 8 weeks is because of my m/c last time.  ANyway, will keep you all posted, I have the ultrasound on Friday morning (07/21) and am praying very hard that we will see something!  Thanks again!

Hey there...I know exactly what you are going thru...I went in on 6/21 measured 4wks 1 day, then went in on 7/5 and no heartbeat and measured 5wks. Then went in on 7/17 and still no hb only empty gs and measured 6wks 2days. HCG on 7/6 was 10,400 and prog was 21. Dr. said to wait till 7/24 for repeat us and I am beside myself.  I had a mc on 5/21. I'll pray for you for a positive result Friday.

like so many sad, hang in there, I had similar experience with an empty sac at 7 weeks, went back to the doctor and we were able to hear a heart beat, so wait, another 1 to 2 weeks and see if your doc will schedule another ultrasound. The baby should be there (still tiny) and if they don't see the baby, perhaps they'll hear a heart beat.

I am pregnant for the second time.  The first time I had a early miscarriaged.  It was weird.  I didnt miss my period, but the implantation bleeding started 2 days before my period was suppose to come.  Anyways, I am pregnant again.  I am so happy, but I am so scared.  When I missed my period on July 5th I waited 2 days and took a test that said pregnant.  I called the doctors office and they said they would schedule me at the end of the month.  So, 3 weeks later I came in feeling good and strong because it just felt like everything was going to go as planned.  I had cramps but no bleeding which to me was good.  My world came down when the doctor told me there was a gestational sac, but no yolk.  I was just puzzled.  She said it could be that its too early and she questioned my last period which was June 5th.  She said the sac only measured at 4 weeks.  So I was still strong, but sad because I felt like things were going all wrong.   I had bleeding the next day.  Nothing heavy, just light pinkish.  I went to the emergency room and they still saw the sac, but no yolk.  I wasnt cramping or anything.  Today Im having little pain, but nothing big.  The nurse told the doc my hcg was thirteen four, which Im assuming is 13,400.  The doctor said my hcg is elevating like it should and Im just hoping that my appointment I have tomorrow will show something that gives me hope for my unborn child.  Im hoping that the light bleeding is making room for the yolk in the sac.  I just pray and cry for my unborn child.  Thats the only thing I know how to do.

It is wayyy too early to see anything other than the sac.  Trust me on this.

I just went with my wife for her to have an interior U/S after our OBGYN couldn't find a heart beat at our 10w appointment.  The doctor said she had an inverted uterus which made it more difficult to find the heartbeat.  She told us to come back in two weeks, or have the U/S...and we couldn't wait to have the peice of mind.  Well, it appeared that the sack was empty.  We can't get the imaging center and our doctor to talk quickly so we can get an answer and my wife is worried sick.  Has anyone had this experience and things still be OK?

I am in the same boat here, Last period was June 7th! Was late July 5th, took the test....positive!
Had my first visit on July 30th. The doc said she saw the gestational sac, and claims she saw the yolk sac, but my picture she printed out shows NOTHING! I have to come back in a wekk to see if I was just earlier that we thought, but even at 6 1/2 weeks, cant you see something? I should be almost 8 weeks if not more according to my calculations! I have had no bleeding and no symptoms of pregnancy other than sore breasts and hungy all the time, but now after my appt, the sore breasts seemed to have gone away?? I'm so worried and this wait is killing me. Did my blood work today so we'll see what happens.......I've have two miscarriages before and cant take another loss!

Turning 40 this year...not keeping track of anything, sex with husband, period dates....nothing. So missed last month, because oldest daughter and I are on similar cycles, she started I did not. Took urine test at home POSITIVE!!! took another ...POSITIVE!!!!  Sept. 7 went to Family Dr. had blood drawn, positive and HCG was 1899 (with this # I could be 2/3 weeks or 4/5) .  Went to OB today for u/s no baby, no yolk. Yes to sac.  Dr. wants to have boold work every other day for next week to test HCG levels. Said maybe miscarriage or ectopic. Will get another u/s on Thursday.  I am scared!!!! After a whole week thinking...."OMG! Pregnant at 40! What am I thinking?" to "I want this baby"....I am whipped!

Can someone offer advise.  I am 5.5 weeks pregnant and went for an US last night, I was told I have a sac but it appeared empty.  What does this mean.  Is it more likely I will miscarry then have a successful pregnancy.  I am beside myself and ofcourse only thinking the worst.  If she would have seen the yolk sac I would of felt much much better, but just an empty sac.  Is less then 6 weeks too soon??

Hi, i am in the same boat as you. I went for an u/s 2 days ago as i was bleeding very light and have already had 2 miscarridges. The DR told me there was a sack there but it was empty and to go for another scan in thursday. As u can imagine i am going out of my head proberly like you but i suppose we need to saty positive. How did u get on anyway as it has been around 2-3 weeks? Ill let u know how i get on on thursday

hi i'm having the same thing, i'm about 5 weeks and have been spotting bright red, now brown!, had a scan yesterday the results say inconclusive, no evidence of a fetal pole or yolk sac, too early, rescan in 2 weeks, having blood tests to rule out eptopic, but my empty gestational sac is mesuring 12.3mm sureley they should see atleast something other then a black hole!! i know how you feel, my head is all over the place at the moment, and with 3 other children finding it hard to not worry!!

hi im suppose to be 5 weeks tmw and three days ago my hcg levels were 640 they did double from two days before ...ive have two m/c and im so scared there is a sac but its so so small the tech said today that it looks like a sac from three to 4 weeks not five ....i can't take another lose ...also i have cramps almost all the time they feel like period cramps but no blood.  any advice please
