Eyes Rolling when Bottle Feeding

Eyes Rolling when Bottle Feeding

My 4 month old baby's eyes have been rolling backwards when ever she takes a bottle or sucks on her pacifier.  As we have seen it with her no other time, so the eye movement seems to be directly related to her sucking.  She has had a battery of tests done at the hospital, including CAT scan, EEG, spinal tap, blood test, all of which have come back okay.  The neurologist and pediatrician have temporarily diagnosed her with Duane Syndrome, although after researching this myself I do not believe that she has this as her eye movement only seems to be related to feeding, her eyes appear normal and her vision seems fine.  She is going to a pediatric opthamologist soon for further testing.  Has anyone ever heard of a connection of eye rolling to feeding??? Please let me know.

The only experience I've had is when the baby would be sleepy and the sucking would make their eyes roll around and try to close, but they were trying to stay awake.  Everything was fine with them, but it's best to have her checked out thoroughly.

My lactation nurse on the 3-day visit (the one three days after the baby left the hospital at birth) mentioned to me that babies often do really weird things with their eyes, and showed me some photos from a book of the babies looking like they were possessed.  I'm glad you're checking it thoroughly, but that might be what is going on.  If nobody else can help you, talk to a lactation specialist or a nurse that deals with those post-hospital checks, and see if they know about this.

DD would do something similar but it looked like she was doing it b/c she was enjoying it so much.  It looked pretty funny (not scary).  She's soon to be 15 months and hasn't done anything since she was 5 months or so.

All three of my boys would do it, I always equated it to "Oh my goodness this is the best stuff ever"

CJ will be 14 mos at the end of the month and he still does it when he nurses. That is one thing I am sorely going to miss when he weans. It is so cute.

Yep, Brody does it when I nurse him and to me it means just what Andi said "This is heaven" (:
