Feet swelling

Feet swelling

I am 20 weeks pregnant and for the last 4 or 5 weeks my feet and ankles have been swelling big time. I brought this up to my doctor but the only thing she said was to cut out salt. But my feet will swell at least twice their normal size ever day. At night I wrap them in a cold towel, put them up and put ice on them, but the are still swollen by morning and my whole leg hurts. I sit infromt of a comouter all day so it's not like I am on my feet all day. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Swelled feet may just be something you will have to deal with.  As long as your blood pressure is fine, it can be a very normal pregnancy symptom.  Here are some things to try that would sometimes work for me...don't cross your legs or your ankles while sitting, rotate your ankles every once in a while to help circulation, and if you sit all day make sure you get up once an hour or so and walk around for a few minutes.  I have been dealing with swollen feet too...but I've noticed a huge improvement in the last few days since I went on my maternity leave!  Good luck and I hope you find some relief.

Oh!  One more suggestion that my doctor gave me but I never tried...support panty hose!  It worked well for my co worker.

It only gets worse.  I sit at a desk all day and prop my feet up, but it doesn't help.  And just to let you know, your salt intake won't affect your swelling much, it's a natural part of pregnancy.  I am 31 weeks along now and my feet look like tree stumps.  My doc says it's from the hormone relaxin that's making your feet wider and swollen, so there's really not much you can do but try to keep them propped up as much as possible.

Hey how are you i know what you are going though mine do the exact same thing only one of my feet do it not both its weird but my doctor told me that if my leg starts to hurt i should come in because it could be a blood clot. Thats kind of scary i am not sure if you mentioned this to your doctor but if not i definately would. But other then that the swelling is normal and nothing to be worried about as long as there is no pain.

They have things called TED HOSE. They are like compression pantyhose. They sell them at most medical supply stores. They ones you can buy over the counter are 10-20 compression. They really really help with sore legs as well as swelling. I am a nursing student and being on the floor all day not sitting for a minute was killing me, then going to work as a waitress all night...I wanted to die. My legs would KILL me, and they would be sooooo swollen. I swear by the TED HOSE. They have knee highs and thigh highs. Call around to the medical stores for them. You dont need a prescription unless you get above 20 compression.
