Fetal growth but no heartbeat

by kerry38, Sep 08, 2006 12:00AM
1st u/s showed two sacs. One measuring 6 1/2 wks and saw a heartbeat, 2nd sac measured 5 wks and nothing shown in it. Week later 2nd u/s. Still two sacs 1st sac measured 7 1/2 wks and this time they say two fetal poles in the same sac but no heartbeats. The 2nd sac was 5 1/2 wks and shown nothing.

I go back Monday for 3rd u/s to see if there is growth or not.

Question is the first time they didnt see twins but say one heartbeat. How did the sac grow and no heartbeats. Could one twin be blocking the other? If no growth is seen next week I have a D&C.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this! I think what could be happening or have happened is that you became pregnant and 2 sacs formed as though twins were developing except only in 1 sac did a baby start to grow, hence the heartbeat detected. The other would not have developed but the sac may have continued to grow for a short time until eventually it would be expelled by the body. If they have been unable to find the other baby's heartbeat (that they saw last time) at the next u/s then I guess the baby has since died (sorry) and it too will eventually be m/c'd. I don't think the other sac without a baby would have caused the death of your other baby as I have heard of plenty of twin pregnancies where one is lost and the other carried to term. Unfortunately it just sounds like a twin pregnancy that did not work out. Perhaps there was a problem with the baby's growth and development. I'm really sorry if this is the case ...I hope the next u/s provides you with some better answers and maybe even some better news. But if it doesn't then I wish you well in your recovery. There are many of us on here that have m/c and you will find a lot of support until you are ready to try again and through your next pregnancy.

Thank you for your comments. I go in tomorrow for another u/s. If the worst case is they died. What is the better route a d&c or medications to expell them? Thanks
