Fetal heartbeat by Ultrasound

Fetal heartbeat by Ultrasound

I'm needing some advice or some experiences in what I'm going through. I have had a vaginal ultrasound performed on Monday. The baby was estimated to be 5 weeks,6days. No heartbeat was found. So, I went back on Friday for another vaginal ultrasoudn. The baby was estimated to be 6 weeks,1 day. They still cannot find a heartbeat. The doctors are now testing my HCG levels to see if they are doubling like they should. I will find out tomorrow. They have mentioned that I may have a blighted ovum. I'm truly worried about what is going on. I really wanted this pregnancy to go to term.

Try not to worry too much.  I had an ultrasound done at 5w3d and they didnt find a hearbeat, just found a sac.  They told me to come back in a week and have another ultrasound.  I was petrified that there was something wrong.  They told me that sometimes the heartbeat doesnt show up until you are 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 weeks along.  I went back when I was 6w4d and we saw the little peanuts heartbeat.  I was so relieved.  You probably just had one a little too early.  Sometimes just a day can make a difference.  Try and hang in there and think positive.  Good luck.  Suzie

Even if your hcg levels don't double, don't give up hope (as long as they do go up some).  I went in on Monday and my levels were 12,??? and on Thursday, they were 21,601.  My doctor thought that was great even though it scared me to death.  He said eventually you no longer double in 2 days...it can take longer...and that the levels start to slow down.  I found on www.obfocus.com (I think) that they only double the first 4 weeks.  By 6-7 weeks, it may take 3 1/2 days to double.  Bottom line, if the results of the hcg aren't good enough, demand more ultrasounds.  Good luck and let us know what happens.

Did they even see the baby?  just no heartbeat?  In a blighted ovum, there is no "peanut" or anything, just the "black hole" (sac)?  I know how you feel, I have been there.. stay positive!  Have you been pregnant before?  momttc

To update you on what is going on, my HCG levels rose. They didn't double. There has been no growth since Friday and still no heartbeat. I'm going back on Wed. to check my levels again & do another ultrasound. My doctor feels pretty sure that I'm not going to carry this baby to term.

I am so sorry to hear that.  I really had hoped things would work out for you.  I know what kind of sadness and stress this brings.  Just curious...how much did your levels rise?  And when you say that there was no growth...do you mean by the measured size of the fetus?  How about other symptoms?  Do you feel anything else, or have your symptoms diminished?  I am still praying for you!

Dear Stacie-
I am very sorry to hear your latest news///  I had a blighted ovum, in between my 1st and 2nd pregnancy.  It is just awful the way they make you wait... I had to let them draw blood, to check HCG levels, then wait two days, go back and have blood drawn again... It was the longest week of my life... finally on the last day, I started to bleed and cramp, very very badly. They had me come in for a D and C.  My prayers are with you.. and if it makes you feel any better, I got pregnant again, 3 months after the MC and everything was fine..... Good luck!!

My HCG level rose from 69,000 to 77,000. I'm having symptoms still. The only symptoms I've had was the loss of appetite for the foods I usually eat and my breasts enlarging. By the ultrasound, the fetus measured to be 6 weeks,1 day Friday and today. I wouldn't even know anything was going wrong if I hadn't gone to visit the doctor. I'm feeling fine, physically. One other thing I forgot to mention was that they found another yolk sac today while performing the ultrasound; so it looks like I would've had twins. Thanks for your prayers. That's the best thing anyone can do for us.

Your hcg levels are extremely high for 6 weeks.  If you lost a twin, couldn't that be why your levels did not double.  It seems like they are so high and losing one of two babies would make them go up less than doubling.  I don't know though.  Maybe you can ask your doctor about that.  I am really hoping for you.  Please let us know how things turn out.

I am in the same situation as everyone else. I am 6 weeks pregnant and went to the doctor because I started cramping and they did an ultrasound and have not been able to find a heartbeat. I go back in 2 weeks to check again. They did say it was early but I am still scared.

Oh man. This is so crazy that so many of us have experinced this. I just went to my first ultrasound yesterday. The same is happening to me. They found a sac but no heartbeat. But my problem is I can't remember my exact date of my period (I am supposed to be in my 6 week). So now I have to sit here and wait to complete my second blood test tomorrow. Frusterating. What's even more frusterating is that I still have all of the symptoms like nasuea etc. They keep asking me if I have had any bleeding or cramping which I haven't so that confuses me. How can a misscariage happen w/o one noticing it?

hey. so ive been looking up on these forums like everyday now for the past week and this is the first one that i've responded to. I'm 20 yrs old and this is my first pregnancy and i am scared to death to experience a miscarriage. i was at work last saturday and had heavy bleeding and small clots. i heard that some woman get this in miscarriage but also it can be normal. i hate those odds, but it lasted for 4 days and the day it happened i went into the hospital and had the ultra sound done...they found nothing, then had the vaginal ultrasound done and they found a sac. I'm pretty sure i was 6 weeks at the time (today i am around 7) and they didnt see a heartbeat. when i go back for another ultrasound in a week is it possible that they could still see it? like, was it too early before?........im extremely terrified.

My sister is actually having a similar problem...she went for an ultrasound to be told she was 6w2d but the heart rate was only 43bpm! But her doctor has not even tested her hcg, which I thought was routine? Now she is heading in for another ultrasound (in 2 days) and they have told her if the heart rate has not increased that they can't have the baby. Yet they still havent checked her hcg!!!  Has anyone had the same problem, or got any advice as to what to do?
Much appreciated!

I am suppose to be 6 1/2 weeks prego.
I had some bleeding at 6 weeks and
went to the hospital to find a heartbeat and a closed cervix.

Two days later I went for my follow up
and my doctor told me he couldn't
detect a heartbeat and to come back
in 5 days; looks like a miscarry.

Why do I have to come back is the
baby really lost or could the
Ultrasound machine be inaccurate.  Has
this ever happened to anyone.
