Fetal heartbeat seen, but very slow rising HCG after dip,and some bleeding

by KateCW, May 30, 2003 12:00AM
ON May 20 I had appropriate beta levels of 20,700. My betas were being monitored weekly, and were more than doubling. I started to bleed on May 21, which slowed to nothing on May 24 and have not even spotted since. My betas on May 22 dropped slightly to 20, 2019. A transvaginal ultrasound showed a fetus of appropriate size with no heartbeat yet, and a bleed around the implantation site. ON May 26 another beta was drawn and had risen to 33, 089. ON May 27 another transvaginal ultrasound showed a 6 wk. 4 day old fetus with a heartbeat. There was also evidence of a collection of blood 92.5 cm) in the uterus, although I have no bleeding or cramping. ON May 30 my levels had only risen slightly to 35,639. I will have another ultrasoudn next week.I am 39 and have had 2 miscarriages in 2002.My questions are:
i) if the pregnancy continues, does slow rising hcg such as this have a negative impact on the health and development of the fetus?
ii) What is the best otucome predictor at this point, the heartbeat or the slow beta?
iii) My RE didn't mention this, but is the "vanishing twin" theory a possible explanation for these erratic levels? My RE is perplexed.

I am being seen by an RE at a Repeat Miscarriage program, and taking progesterone suppositories daily. thank you.

Hello,
I've HCG raising issues also, after 2 misc. my fertility doc. (because I did an IVF w/egg donor 2 embryos transfered) told me the most important once you've heard the heartbeat is the u/s and less the HCG levels..Yes also if it drops a bit could be a vanishing twin, a friend had that twice after IVF and 4 embryos transfered, than normal pregn.
I am not starting my week 6  my first HCG day 10 was: 111 /day 12: 171 /(should double every. 72h. or +66% every. 48h.)day 14 :324 than we got scared because 4 days later DAY 18: 528 should have been around 800+  today day 21  3 days later  surprise surprise :4328!! go figure!  keep your hopes high don't worry too much like me relax no lifting scrubbing and jumping ... when is your next doc. appoint.  I am going tomorrow am  for u/s   do you have other children?
take care

I feel a bit nauseous today but I am so excited could be anything.. my stomach a bit upside down cause of the numbers. We should play lotto this week end if it is good luck week! LOL we never know  we all could use extra cash do we?
For morning sickness got an old say from grandma : cookie and glass of water or something else to drink on your nightstand do not put your feet down the bed before you put something in yr stomach...first-  never had the chance to try but will, hope it works.
