Fetal pole

Fetal pole

I am pregnant and I went to the ER on Tuesday 6/1/10 due to lite cramping. I am using precaution because I had a miscarriage 3 years ago and this would be my first baby. The ER said that everything was alright and they discharged me to my Obgyn which is in the same hospital. The OB wanted  to see me and when I got up stairs she said that Im sorry to see you under these circumstances. Me still thinking that everything was alright, I did not think anything of it I just thought that she was just saying that because I came in for cramping. The doctor then broke the news to me that there is an empty sac and my HCG levels were at 10, 960 inwhich there should be a visible fetal pole. She classified it as being a spontaneous abortion. I immediately become emotional. The doctor was going to set  up the D&C for this up and coming friday. I walked out and came back the next day with my mother. We spoke with the head doctor of the clinic and he explained that they really are  not sure what is going on and they  want me to come back in a week for another U/S.I was reading on the internet that usually in a molar pregnancy( Spontaneous abortion) syptoms (symptoms) are usually higher then normal HCG levels.  I am currently 5 wks/ 4 days. Is this to early to see a fetal pole? I am so scared because I really want this baby. Is it possible that the baby is just to small to see on the U/S?

Wow im sorry you are going through this. Cramping is normal in pregnancy and it mostly occurs in the first trimester. With you only being 5 week 4 days it is normal to not see a fetal pole. I was not able to see a fetal pole through vaginal us until 7 weeks. Also in some cases fetal poles can not be seen until 8-9 weeks. I would not go through with the d&c because your numbers look great and if i had to guess id say this is a viable pregnancy. I wish you the best of luck and please keep us updated.

sounds like a blighted ovum thats what I had... But your very early and I feel in my opinion that you should wait to see if any changes at least wait 2 weeks... cause sometimes you can be misdignoised expecially with you being so early... hope this website gives you much comfort  http://www.misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com/mycommunity/viewtopic.php?t=4864

It could certainly be too early to detect a heartbeat,  and I would not do anything until you have another ultrasound.  A lot can change in a week!  You can also request another round of blood tests to see what your hormone levels are doing.  I've been thru something similar, and the waiting is so horrible.  Try to stay positive and best of luck to you!

Hi, I just wanted to update you. I went to another hospital and I told them what the previous outcome was at the other hospital. They told me that they don't see the heartbeat but they see the baby. I am going tomorrow for a third opinion and I am not going to give them anything to go off of. Do you think that it still may be to early to detect the heartbeat.? I am exactly eight weeks today.

Generally by 8 weeks you can see a heartbeat. There are some reasons why you might not, such as late ovulation, poor equipment, fetal positioning is bad... etc. The babies heart starts to beat between 5-6 weeks, and can normally be seen by 7 weeks on most ultrasounds, though there are cases where women hasn't seen it till 8+ weeks. In your case, I would prepare for the worse news, but hope for the best. I'm sorry that you're going through this right now, and I hope the best for your situation.
