Fever

Fever

Michael just got his shots yesterday. Poor little guy four shots, 2 in each leg. Now he is running a fever. I am taking his temperature under his arm but I can't remember how much I am suppose to add to the temperature to get close to the right temperature. I thought it was like .9 or .6. But I can't remember.

The doctor told me with both of mine to add a degree. so if it was 98.6 on the themometer then 99.6 was the temp.  But he also told me it was beter to take it in the rectum.  He said it was very accurate there.

Hope I have been a little help.  Also are you giving him tylenol?  I had to give mine tylenol like clockwork after shots

Thank you. I am giving him Motrin. He seems to like the taste better. I gave him some tylenol this morning and he gaged on it so much that he made himself throw up.

lol.  My little girl was like that, she gagged on everything it seemed like.  The doctor told me tylenol and motrin. He told me if I alternated them every 4 hrs that they wouldn't get ammune (immune) to one and have to take more than the required dosage.  I'm sorry I'm not trying to tell you what to do or anything I gave mine motrin too before he told me that, He also said it would help keep the fever down if you alternate.

Lots of luck with it, I remember how stressfull shots were on all of us, not just the baby. lol

His temp is no higher then 100.4 that is with adding a degree. I am not really worried about right now. I know that baby's run a fever when they get their shots.

How high is the temp?  And yes, the rectal one is the most accurate.

Follow your instincts, and if the temp is not quickly going away today, call your doc.  Tylenol alternating with Motrin in most cases should take care of a mild reaction to the baby shots.  If it is not, I would make a quick call to check with the doc.

Good luck!

Well I have decided to altranate every 3 hours with tylenol and motrin because the tylenol didn't even phase the fever.

The best advice I got was from a pediatric nurse I used to work with and that advice was to premedicate a couple of hours before going into the doctor.  After the first set of immunizations she spiked a fever just like you are going through now and I was at work complaining about it when the nurse came in and suggested premedicating before the shots.  It worked like a charm for my daughter she did not have any of the side effects after that, no fevers at all.  I think it may have even dulled the pain from the shot a little. So maybe you could try this for the next round.  Poor little things I always thought of the immunizations as a necessary evil.lol.
