Fifths Disease While Pregnant???

Fifths Disease While Pregnant???

Well, we haven't been lucky in escaping anything this winter so now I'm worried...My daughter got a note sent home on Tuesday that she has someone in her class who was diagnosed with Fifths Disease.  Apparently the incubation period is 7-28 days and they really don't have any signs until the rash appears and by then they aren't contagious however, they said Pregnant Women are NOT supposed to be around them. I remember when I was pregnant with my daughter and I was teaching and the school nurse came and found me and said "You need to leave NOW and call your doctor because Fifths Disease is in the building." I called and they did blood work and I didn't have it but I also didn't have a child at home with it.  Plus, how do I know if she has it or not prior to the rash?  After shingles, the stomach flu, and now this and I'm only 8 weeks along.  AHHH...

Doea ANYONE have any information on this? It's would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Julie

I am not excally sure, but I do remember I was in 7th grade and I was diagnosed with Fifths Disease and they did a blood test to verify that was the case. I would say to call your family doctor and see if he can order a blood test to determine if she has it. Good Luck keep us posted.

I had fitths disease and my babysitter was pregnant, and I could NOT be around her.  If your daughter has it you cant be too close to her, its bad for the baby.

Thanks girls.  I'll call her doc. right now and see if they can do a blood test to see if she has it. The problem would be the 7-28 day incubation period. I wonder if it would come up on a blood test during the incubation period. OK, I'm actually on hold as I told the receptionist the problem and she said "I'm not even going to have a nurse call you back, hold on and I'll get one now."  So, when I get off, I'll update again.  I LOVE our ped. office!!!

OK, they told me there's no way to find out if she has it early and told me to call my OB right away so I just called them and a nurse will call me back.  UGH.....why does this stuff always happen?  I'll let you know what I Find out! Thanks so much!

Just talked to my OB and they said to come in and have blood work done and it will tell them if I have the antibodies against the ParvoB19 so if I come in this afternoon, they will have the results back Monday.  I feel like I'm being a freak about this and she doesn't have any symptoms but with shingles, then stomach flu and not this, plus having a child with special needs and then a miscarriage, I'm just a train wreck this pregnancy.

I know fifth disease is dangerous while pregnant. It is good you are being so cautious. Good luck and keep us posted on Monday. Try to have a good weekend. :)

I am a teacher, too and the first time I was pregnant, my doctor did a test to see if I had antibodies against the disease.  He was that about 90% of adults have had it at some time and may not have known it.  The test came back that I had it as a child.  I never knew it.  I would assume that you have probably had it before.  Especially if you were a teacher.  I know it is hard, but try not to worry.  I'm sure it will all be fine.

Just got the blood done so we'll see on Monday.  I'm feeling fairly confident now that I have had it considering all of my work with kiddos. I guess I didn't realize that you could have antibodies to it to that helps calm the fear a little!  Still just frustrating!  I'll let you know what I find out!

Good, did they send this letter home with every parent?

Ironically, they only sent letters home to the kids in HER class however, they all share the gym, music room, recess equipment, drinking fountains, bathrooms, etc. so I might mention today that they need to send a note home to EVERY parent as I know there are lots of pregnant mom's there.   It's our church preschool.  I STILL don't have my blood test back yet. They told me that I'd have it Monday but they called me yesterday and said that the lab said ParvoB19 can take up to a week so hopefully by Friday we'll know!  I'll let you know when I find out!
