Flouride Pills

Flouride Pills

I posted a question yesterday about Prometruim / Progesterone, but I also had some questions on flouride. My Doctor has me taking chewable flouride tablets everyday. The problem once again is the Pharmacist where I pick up my scripts keeps questioning my doctors reasoning. From what I have heard there is enough flouride in the h20 we drink that I shouldn't be on it?? Any insight out there??

Have a Wonderful weekend everyone!

Hmm, that I don't know about, I never took fluride...  Maybe you should call your doctor and ask him about it?

Good Morning. I know I should trust my Doctor but when other women haven't heard of it...it makes me nervous! I could also be over reacting since this is my first!

Take care!

Do you have well water? City water is treated with a flouride supplement, however if you live in a rural area and do not have city water it would not have flouride in it.  Same is true if you drink bottled water.

I have never specifically heard of pregnant women needing the flouride supplement if they do not have city (treated) water, only kids.  Also as far as I understand it is for kids' teeth so I don't know what the benefit would be to a pregnant woman.  I would call your doctor's office and talk with a nurse.  She must know his rationale for prescribing this supplement.  I have to say without knowing your circumstances I agree with the pharmacist on this one.

From what I was told by the Nurse, the babies teeth buds are forming and this is to help them become stronger...I am concerned, yet if it saves me on dental bills down the road how can I complain...hahahah.  THX

It would also depend on your teeth. I used to work in the dental field and adults can take a flouride supplement if their teeth or diet warrant it. I would write all these things down and definitely check with your doctor on Monday. Your questions are very valid and since your Pharmacist is creating doubt, I would want clarification.

Or dentist told us that even though our CITY water does not have flouride, that the amounts provided in toothpaste were enough. For myself, I do have to use ACT flouride rinse as I was blessed with weak teeth : (

I have not been put on pills and when I asked about drops for my son, he said toothpaste was enough.

My pediatrician had me give fluoride drops to my first daughter for her teeth.  My daughter later developed white spots on her teeth.  My dentist told me that doctors over prescribe fluoride and it causes white spots to have too much of it.  It caused fluorosis.  You might want to look that up on a web sight somewhere.  My dentist told me that flouride toothpaste is sufficient for strenghtening the teeth.  That there is much speculation about the use of it internally.  The main benefit comes from taking it topically.  There is some research that even points out that too much fuoride causes cancer.  I have even heard about this debate on the news.  I have a link that I found that I will post after this.  It has some interesting information about the debate of fluoride.  I commend your pharmecist for making a comment about the flouride.  I used to work for a pharmecist many years ago.  They go through many years of training in the area of medications.  They know a lot more compared to a doctor does in that area.  They learn the chemical compositions, etc.  A doctor mainly learns medical practices and what medications go with what sicknesses. If I were you, I would definetely search out the matter more.  I buy some mineral water from the health food store called Trinity Natural Mineral Supplement.  The bottle contains 0.9 mg of fluoride per 8 oz. of water.  On the bottle it says that pregnant women should not exceed 16 oz. per day.  That would mean no more that 1.8 mg per day.  The company phone number is (800)390-5693 or www.trinitysprings.com.  If there is any concern regarding your water fluoride supply, you might want to consider buying this water and get your fluoride that way.  I would feel safer about that.  I too am a fireman's wife.  He works for LA County Fire Dept.  Where does your husband work?  I hope that you have a wonderful pregnancy!  (-:

Hi There, My husband is also an Engineer.  He was a paramedic also prior to that.  It is a pretty grueling time to get through but worth it.  I hope that your baby is delivered after he gets through.  My husband hopes to one day be a captain.  At LA Co., it looks good on your resume if you go through all the different positions of firefighter, paramedic, and then engineer.  He even worked in the inspection office during his first year of Engineer.  Hope that all goes well with your pregnancy.  I am hoping to conceive.  We have a 11 yr. old and 2 1/2 yr. old.  I would like another one close to the 2 1/2.  My 11 yr. old was so lonely for a playmate.  I don't want my younger one to go through that.  I lost a pregnancy over 1 yr. ago due to a supposed blighted ovum and D&C.  After many months of research, I think that there is a great possibility that I could have been misdiagnosed.  I have not been able to conceive since my D&C.  I just hope that it is not due to scarring which can happen with a D&C.  Through all of that, I got led to this web-site.  I really like it.  The gals are great about responding to each other.  It has been on a lot of fun.  I am on a mission here to help women who have been through what I have with diagnosed blighted ovum.  I know how emotionally hard it can be.  Take Care.  Keep us updated.  These posts often get deleted I noticed.  You can always put up a new post to say hello.

I took fluoride pills when I was pregnant with my son.  He was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at age 4.  That doesn't mean the fluoride caused it, but it doesn't mean it didn't, either.  The doctors still tell me they don't know the cause.  He's 33 now.  We're battling with raidiation damage to the arteries, and he will have a third carotid endartarectomy in the next couple of weeks.  But, he's had only one cavity!  I would research it further, if I were you.  Maybe contact the American Cancer Society.  They have a lot of data available, and study results.  In fact, I think I should contact them again, as it's been quite some time.  Maybe there's new data available.  When something like that happens to your child, you never stop asking why.
