Fluctuating Progesterone Levels

by NJ Auntie, May 14, 2004 12:00AM
My sister just found out she was pregnant on Tuesday, unfortunately yesterday, they found that her progesterone levels were low and a vaginal ultrasound showed a cyst the size of a penny on her ovary but no "baby".  Also she has been spotting brown for over week.  She is scheduled for another preg. test on Monday.  Any suggestions?

Hi

I hate to sound negative but I had a v similar experience with my third failed pregnancy, my levels were falling, I had a scan which showed just the sac no baby, I miscarried the day after the scan,, has your sister had cramps with the bleeding? Is it just brown blood and not much, or has she had alot which is red like a period?
I also had a cyst on my ovary but was told women get cysts on their ovaries all the time, as long as it isnt filled with fluid with bits floating in it, which they should have mentioned, that is no problem.

I hope for her sake everything is ok, let me know how it goes

Thanks for your response.
Apparently my sister has only been spotting, not heavy and brown in color.

Thank you for your concern and a soon as I know anything I will respond.

How far along is she? If she's 4-5 weeks, you may not be able to see anything just yet.

Also, you say her progestrone was low? but was it still rising and doubling? Do you have any #'s?

The purpose of the ultrasound was to determine how many weeks she is. I will be speaking to her this evening to find out in detail what is going on.  She lives in Puerto Rico and the health care there is not the best in the world.

As soon as I obtain any information I will post it.

Thank you!

HI, I JUST WANTED TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT MY SISTER DID INDEED HAVE A MISCARRIAGE.  IT WAS FINALLY CONFIRMED YESTERDAY.  THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP.

THE GOOD THING IS THAT THE DOCTOR REALIZED THAT MY SISTER HAS VERY LOW PROGESTERONE LEVELS, SO IN THE FUTURE WHEN AND IF SHE BECOMES PREGNANT THEY WILL MONITOR HER CLOSELY.

THANKS AGAIN

Has anyone every had a normal progesterone level that dropped and gone on to have a normal pregnancy? I m/c in Feb. 04 so I"m a bit fearful of it happening again. With this pregnancy, I went in for my 1st blood test on 5/3, HCG was 30 and Progesterone was 17; 2nd blood test was done on 5/6, HCG was 154 and Progesterone was 24.3. My dr. had me wait 2 wks to come back. I had a U/S and another blood test on 5/20, and the ulstrasound measured my gestational sac to be 5 wks 5 days pregnant, and according to my LMP, I am 6 wks 5 days pregnant. My dr. didn't seem concerned about the one week difference and said I probably was on a 35 day cycle that month instead of 28. The blood results had my Progesterone at 10 and my HCG at 10,000. My dr. put me on Prometrium 200mg at bedtime. She said it was hopeful b/c my HCG was so high and I have to go back in a week for another U/S and blood test. Has this happened to anyone where your Progesterone levels had dropped but yet went on to have a healhty pregnancy? You can reach me at ***@**** if you wish to respond. Thanks for your help.
