Gestational Diabetes- any advice?

Gestational Diabetes- any advice?

Hi all.  I failed the 3-hour glucose tolerance test today, so it's official: I have GD.  (I already knew this because of my wacked-out energy levels and mood swings.)  Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone who has been through this has any advice about diet, exercise or otherwise managing it?  I'm seeing the nutritionist on Monday but that seems like a long way away.

I'm especially wondering if there's a glucose testing meter that you could recommend... maybe one that will be less painful than what the lab tech used today?  It sure is hard to type with all these lancet holes in my fingers!

Thanks!

i had gd....it wasnt so bad..once i learned what i could and couldnt eat.  i got my tester free from the diabetes dr.  actually there is this thing that came w/ that had a loaded spring and you just push a button and it snaps it so fast you dont even realize it.  i tested way more than they said to.  i wanted to know what foods affected me what ways.  No sugar, limited fruit (very limited), very tiny servings of bread and pasta (best eaten w/ a protein) and veggies were okay as long as i didnt eat potatoes or corn.  I ate a lot of cheese and yogurt.  Nuts were good and I dont eat meat so i did eat a lot of soy products.  quantity also came into play but if you eat a small snack type meal every few hours you are fine.  No pancakes killed me.  I was able to control it through diet which was great.  good luck.  :)

I'd also like to hear any advice on this subject. I was diagnosed Monday after failing the 3 hour GTT. I have yet to see the diabetes counselor. She is supposed to be calling...
Anyway, my Dr's office prescribed the one touch ultra 2 meter for me. You can test on your palm or forearm instead of our poor little fingertips. I know mine still hurt from that test.

There was an article on Yahoo news not to long ago saying Cinamon is supposed to keep blood sugar levels down. My mother n law is diabetic and has some daily.

If you don't get a meter free let me know and I'll be happy to send you a brand new one. My mom is a diabetic and she received two meters and only needs one. She gets a new one all the time so she told me to find someone that might need a new meter. I can't remember right off what brand it is, but I do know it's one of the newer ones, I think one that you can test on your arms and legs or something like that. If you want it you can email me and give me your address and I'll get it sent out to you. ***@****

I was diabetic with my first baby--I use to eat a lot of skinless chicken with cream of broccoli soup for lunch--I would eat yogurt and fruit with grape nuts cereal for breakfast (this one was a little high in carbs) but would fill me up and last along time.  For supper I would have green beans or carrotts with a very sensible meal.  If I wanted pop I would drink diet pepsi caffenine free or diet sprite.   Watch out for things that say sugar free--they can still have lots of carbs in them.  I did cut out tons of things that had carbs--I went very extreme with my diet once I found out--I did only end up gaining 17lbs the whole pg that way--You can eat more complex carbs they actually last longer and break down way slower so they are better for you.  I am a meat eater--so if I wanted McDonalds I would get a double cheeseburger no bun--and eat a side salad.  Peanuts are a great snack--high in protein low in carbs, Now they have great ice cream for carb smart diets that also help with this.
