Gestational diabetes

by newlypregnant, Jan 15, 2007 12:00AM
I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and on a diet now. I have very high sugar in the morning (fasting) between 6.2-7.8 mmol or 112-140. Do you know how I can control this sugar. I heard that if the fasting sugar level is not controlled, I will be put on insulin which I DONT WANT. I normally take a bed time snack of 6 very thin vegetable thin crackers with a babybel cheese and 1/4 cup 1% milk. I tried eliminating the milk but still the number is not going below 6.2. Any ideas of what can be done.

i had GD as well...i lived on cheese...its ok to have cheese, actually its really good to have.  you need protein for your baby.  i didnt eat meat so cheese helped.  stay away from carbs... i tested like crazy... i never ate sugar, fruit, breads or even pbj which i loved...i stuck to veggies and fruit..if i had bread it would be one slice a day...research it a little bit to see what food is best to eat.  it is very important to control it...your numbers arent so bad...i had to stay under 120.  good luck.

I had g/d. U kinda have to test around to see really. Do you mean that in the morning before u eat anything your sugar level is between 112 and 140? if so....wow. Mine is like normaly ranging from 75 to 90.  Your best bet may be to go on insulin, if not you gonna be starving yourself it sounds like. But your best bet is to stay limit your carbs to small amts. like bread, no sugar, pasta, stuff like that. Eat alot of vegs. I eat cheese, u can replace bread with wraps. Just a few ideas. i am actually on insulin though, b/c i couldn't control my sugar neither. Good luck

Newly - are you exercising?  I walked a couple miles every other day when I had GD,  and it went very well.

Best wishes.

If your fasting sugar is high, it doesn't matter what you eat at your bedtime snack, but you'll more liekly than not, have to go on insulin. I was able to control all my sugars through diet except for the first morning sugar and consequently had to taker insulin before bed to lower the morning sugar. Good luck.

For me, I've found that I had to eliminate crackers, cereals, milk, pastas, and breads, especially from the morning and afternoon parts (but I don't eat them at night either for fear they'll bring my blood sugars up and/or keep my blood sugars up. It's very frustrating when you have nearly nothing to eat, and no money to buy anything with either, and WIC's food (some of it) isn't on my diet, or I can't get the correct type for my diet because WIC doesn't cover it, blah, blah, blah, needless to say alot of the time, I'm just plain hungry...I did buy a few snackies, but even they raise my blood sugars by more than I'd like, so I usually won't eat them either (Glucerna snack bars, Dannon fit & lite yogurt (be careful with this stuff), I eat lots of ham, cheese, eggs, (mild salsa-when I think maybe I can get around the heartburn somehow)... salad, when I can buy it, and that's about all I can think of besides carrots & broccoli dipped in a bit of Lite ranch for snackies.... Good luck, Honey... it's tough.
