Getting periods while breastfeeding

I was wondering if anyone knows much about getting a period while breastfeeding. I'm exclusivley nursing my 3 month old DD and I just got a full blown period,cramps and all. I wasn't really expecting one yet ,but obviously it's happening.

Some women do, some don't.  I didn' ovulate until 10 months later but a friend of mine got hers immediately.

The two times before when I breastfed I got my period back at 4 weeks just like normal.  This time has been CRAZY!  I haven't gotten my period, just a bunch of clear discharge (sorry tmi) so I have NO way of keeping up with my cycle.  I have always used the calendar method.  Anyway, this was a question I was wondering about as well, so I am glad you posted.  Don't mean to be too personal, but are you on bc?  I am still trying to figure out what I want to do.....thanks!

I got mine back @ 4 months.  Total bummer.

I got my period back approximately 6 weeks postpartum.

I got mine also at 4 months post partum.  I was very upset and that's when my milk started to dry up :(((

Were you all breastfeeding at the time when you got your period??? I'm not on BC of any kind yet,just condoms.Not sure what we are going to do. Is my milk going to go because I got my period? I know everyone is different.

Yes, I was. I am not on any sort of birth control either and my son is only 2 mths 2 weeks and I have had 2 periods already. My milk is decreasing because I only breast feed him when I get off of work 6pm-4am. I currently drink mother's milk tea to help with production when necessary.

I was exclusively b/feeding.  I didn't mean that your milk is going to dry up just b/c you got your period.  Mine did but it doesn't mean yours will as well.  I would strongly suggest to be very consistent with pumping, breastfeeding, etc.  I went back to work and was not pumping consistently.  That could be the reason as well.  Since AF and the work happened at the same time, I don't know which caused the milk drying up more.

I got my first period at 8 weeks with baby #1, and 30 days with baby #2. I was breastfeeding exclusively, but was regular the whole time. It did not affect my milk supply at all.

Wow! I'm so surprised to hear how many of you got your af's back so early! I breasfed (no bottles or binkys) for over a year will all 5 of my kids and never got my period until after a year with each of them! With this pregnancy, I had 1 (!) period and then got pregnant LOL. So I have only had one in 2 years, and it'll probably be (I hope!) another 2 before I have another LOL.

Forgot to mention that I was still nursing when I got my periods back and it didn't affect my milk at all. The only time I had problems with milk supply when I was nursing was when I got pregnant....within 2 weeks my milk was pretty much gone. Which sucked because I didn't want to stop nursing and neither did he :-(

Thanks everyone for your advice,I do realize that everyone is different,and that's what makes us so special! Ya right,I havent felt special in awhile! Just jokin,just a shower is all I ask for...LOL!

I got mine regularly (about 4 days after post-partum bleeding stopped was the start of my first menstrual) even though I was exclusively breastfeeding.

I havent had my period this whole time while nursing.  I have been nusing for almost 9 months.I have bf before and did continue to have my period, so not having it, was a great surprise. Does anyone know around the time amount of time after bfng that your period might come back?
