Group B Strep -- OPEN FORUM! :)

I am 38 weeks pregnant and I was told by my doctor that I tested positive for Group B Strep. They didn't really explain to me what it meant, and if anyone has any info please let me know.

2 of my friends had that. Basically what it means is that you will have to have a IV with a drip of Penicillian (sp?) it has somthing to do with when baby is born vaginally and the medicine helps keep the group B strep away. Both of my friends had good deliveries and healthy babies. I have to get tested for Group B in a couple weeks. My doc said 30% of women have it.

I tested + with my 1st, never made it to being tested w/my 2nd. I assume I'm + w/ the current one. You need to have the antibiotics every 4 hrs by IV, and needs to be in your system for at least 4 hrs before delievery. It keeps the baby from getting sick, which if they get it, it can be very serious.

The way I always thought about Strept B test was if you tested positive you get to have an IV and if you test negative you don't. All in all you might have to be on an IV regardless:S..Never had one and I'm TERRIFIED LOL...Also I've heard you can pass it down to your baby via normal delivery if not on the med while delivering OR through a c-section. Best of luck:)

i do know my bestfriend had it she had a c-section(her first 2 were c-section too, so that is why she had one w/ this baby too) but just to be on the safe side they gave her the IV. Her baby came out fine.
i just had my test done at 36w. and it was quick and to the point, mine didnt hurt or anything.  she said that my results would be back in a day or two, but there was no reason to call in and get the results, b/c they would go over my results anyway in my next visit.(37weeks, next monday)
*i am not too worried about it though. i posted a few weeks ago about her results and being conserend for her, and got good responces and comforting stories.*
