Group B Strep Question

I had Group B Strep with my first child and I have it again now...I'm due tomorrow! :) My midwife is fully aware and is going to do the IV antibiotics when I deliver or am induced.

My only fear is that if my water breaks, will my baby automatically get Group B?? I've read awful things about Group B and now I'm paranoid.

Any feedback would be helpful.

I'm pretty sure as long as you start the IV antibiotics right away the baby is good. It's just if the baby passes through the birth canal and you haven't been on the antibiotics...I think that is when the problem is.

no the baby only gets the strep as they are going through the birth canal  so as long as you don't have a quick labor your good. good luck...

I had a positive group B Strep and my water broke.  Nothing wrong with my DS!!  Good luck, you will be fine!!

Hi, I was Group B strep positive with both my pregnancies.  It is only dangerous if you are in labor for more than 12 hours after your water breaks....this is what I have been told from 2 different midwives.  Antibiodics are totally unnessesary.  I took some "immunity booster" vitamins for the week before I was due....my second son came fast (whole thing under an hour), and he was fine ...as was my firstborn who took a long time.  I pushed for 5 hours after my nidwife broke my water.  Is this a hospital midwife?  They are quick to overreact and overtreat symptoms in hospitals.  Do not worry.
