HCG Levels High

HCG Levels High

Oct 22nd my HCG level was at 30. Two weeks later my HCG level was 9987.  My doctor said this was very high seeing that I was only 5 weeks 1 day (according to LMP).  She said my levels should be around 5000 and no more than 7000.   I know that there is no chance that I was pregnant before my last period.

Is the HCG too high and what would cause this?

I have not been to my OB yet.  My appointment isn't for 2 weeks.  Any help with this is appreciated.

This is just one of many charts that are available online.  I think your doctor is being maybe a little bit absolutist -- look at the range of normal numbers for 6 weeks, for example.  If you happened to ovulate early in your cycle, such as at Day 7 or 8 instead of Day 14, it might give your numbers a slight boost.  My doctor is a perinatologist, and she almost just shrugs off trying to draw any conclusions from beta hCG numbers.

Guideline to hCG levels during pregnancy:
    * 3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
    * 4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
    * 5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
    * 6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
    * 7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
    * 9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml

That all said, here is what I would do.  I would re-take the beta hCG test, to see if the one that said 9987 was indeed accurate.  (There have been wrong numbers reported on beta hCG tests, on this site.)  Then if it is, get in to see your OB sooner, if possible, and get an ultrasound.  It is MUCH more accurate after the 5- to 6-week point than are beta hCG numbers. It will tell you if you are dealing with something good, such as just a really healthy singleton or multiples (if that is what you want) or something less desirable such as a miscarriage.

I wish you the best.   --  Annie

Incidentally, on one of the websites where you can get beta hCG charts, it says that girls produce higher betas than boys in the early stages.  Something to think about!  :)
