HCG levels taking a long time to decrease after a natural miscarriage

HCG levels taking a long time to decrease after a natural miscarriage

Hi, I was 5 and half weeks pregnant when I started to bleed. I have had an ultrasound which showed that my uterus was empty. I have been having my HCG levels checked every few days for the past 3 weeks. The levels are not coming down the way they should - they went from 102 down to 68 then up again to 75. I've been bleeding for 3 weeks now too. I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? How long will I bleed for? My doctor said that if my levels don't come down by next week they will give me methotrexate. Does anyone know the side effects of that?

Thanks

have you actually miscarried or are you just bleeding? i am not sure but if there is something left then your levels may not go all the way down untill it is all gone. I am sorry that you are going through this i had to have surgery to remove an eptopic preg and they also did a d&c. please call your doc and just talk to a nurse if you have to and ask them why for sure it is not going down. Also some women it takes longer then others. Good luck and i hope all goes well.

Thanks for your advice. I have actually miscarried but my levels are just taking forever to come back down. I really don't want the methotrexate shot because then you can't TTC for at least 3 months. Has anyone ever heard of someone taking this long to naturally miscarry?

It's strange that the levels went back up, and I wonder if there is some pregnancy tissue that the u/s is not picking up? The methtrexate is not too bad- I experienced some abdominal pain and some back pain and a general feeling of blah. Waiting 3 months to TTC after metho is based on studies done on cancer patients. Of course, they get stronger and more frequent doses of metho, so it's possible that you could TTC sooner, but there's no hard data on how long to wait after a single dose. If you do have the metho, I would wait 3 mos. before trying again- just for peace of mind. You'll already be worrying enough once you get pg again- you don't want to also be worrying about the possible lingering effects of metho.

I had a d last August and it took until Dec for my levels to go all the way down. They gave me methergine to help even after a d. Good Luck, Hang in there I know it is hard.

To Caleighsmommy - when it took 5 months for your levels to go down, were you bleeding the whole time?

It's been almost 4 weeks and I'm still bleeding really heavily. My HCG levels are down to 55 as of yesterday. None of the Dr.'s I've seen can figure out why I'm bleeding so much. Has anyone ever heard of this? Thanks!
