HCG won't budge

by lizg, Jul 04, 2003 12:00AM
In Feb. 2003 I found out I was pregnant.  2 weeks later I received blood work and a U/S.  The U/S showed no heartbeat, just an empty sac.  Since I was only 6 weeks preg. we waited another 2 and had a 2nd U/S to confirm.  I chose to miscarry naturally instead of having a DNC.  In March, I had light bleeding for 2 weeks.  HCG level slowly decreased from approx. 1500 down to 150.  In May my HCG levels started fluctuating 10 points up and down each week I had a blood test.  My doctor finally talked me into having the DNC which I did on May 29.  Two weeks later, my HCG was still at 150.  I just had another blood test done June 27 and still no budge in levels.  My doctor said the pathology report from the products of my DNC showed that it was NOT a molar pregnancy.  He's not sure why my levels are not showing any decrease and wants me to see a gynecological oncologist.  From reading other comments on this forum, I understand that it can take up to 8 weeks for HCG levels to come down to 0 following a DNC.  Is it possible that I may have cancer from the trophoblastic cells?  My chest x-ray is clear.  I am becoming extremely worried after being patient for so long.  I can't believe that my body thinks it has been pregnant for nearly 6 months.  (The only good thing is that I haven't had a period to deal with since December 2002) I've had no pain, cramping or major bleeding at all and have not been very concerned until my last doctor's visit.  Do you know of any other cases with these same properties?  Is there any other diagnosis besides cancer?  I hope I don't have to get chemo.

I think you got residual trophoblastic tissue in the womb.

so, to confirm that check the ultrasound and D&C again, you can make sure you got cancer(choriocarcinoma) or just residual villi from that pathology.

and check the hcg level again. and when it rise again, some chemotherapy might be needed.
