HIGH HCG LEVELS - should I worry?

by Hellokittymama, Apr 08, 2005 12:00AM
I went in for my 2nd ultrasound yesterday and another blood test to measure my HCG levels.  I had my 1st ultrasound 4 days ago and only saw a small gestational sac and my HCG level was 12,890.  Now, at the ultrasound, we saw a biger gestational sac AND a yolk sac, all promosing features ... however, my HCG level came back at 28,000.   The doctor says that the sacs tell her that I am 5w 3days but that it doesn't correlate to the high HCG level.  She is concerned that this may be an abnormal pregnancy.  What are your thoughts?

i had a friend who just went through the same thing. she had hcg #'s similar to what you are describing (hers were slightly lower). a baby never developed and she miscarried. that said, it is totally possible that yours will be ok... unfortunately there is nothing you can do but wait and see and try not to worry.

Sound like a molar preganacy to me. The outcome isn't good either. The baby never makes it past 15 weeks, and cancer can be involved.

I lost 3 Pregnancies like that. One was a complete blighted ovum and the other 2 never developed past the yolk sac. Sac grew in all but never a baby :(

I am not trying to scare you, just giving my experience and it could very well be all ok.

Check out this website. It gives the charts for hcg levels. Seems to me you are within the normal range. Not trying to give you false hope, but showing that there is always two ways to look at things.

I don't really know much about hcg numbers, I wish I had some words of encouragement.  I just want you to know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers.  Please keep us posted.  You'll find alot of support here if you need it!

. That is one thing I never checked at all when I was pregnant
I think we can get ourselves worked up about numbers, milestones,etc.... while pregnant.  We are all different and what is for one isnt for another
Its in God's hands ...put your trust in him...

Hello, I know exactly what you are going through, and surprised to hear that someone else has a story like mine. When I first got my HCG levels drawn they were at 15,656, they told me just going by my blood I could be pregnant with multiples or I was 5 months pregnant. I knew I wasn't 5 months and an ultrasound confirmed a fetus of only 6 weeks gestation, but normal. I was extremely sick and could only sleep for days at a time. Then i went in for another blood draw 2 days later and was at 56,000 then another 2 days and it was 124,000 and then a week later at 265,000 the doctors had NO IDEA what was wrong with me I was told I had a twin baby and it died, I had a manifestation of conjoined twins along with a normal preganancy, I had a molar pregnancy along with a normal pregnancy, I had a large corpus luteum cyst producing hcg. Even Cancer was thrown in their somewhere. Can you imagine what I was going through?? All I could do was play the waiting game, and a month and a half passed and I went to a Third Doctor, who explained that my rising hormone levels were somewhat abnnormal,BUT everyone is different and she's seen this before where the mother carries a healthy normal baby. Ultrasound confirmed that everything was normal, I'm still concerned about the health of my baby because of all I went through, but I wsa also told that if the baby was indeed extremely malformed or if a molar was present, then the pregnancy would terminate itself. I'm now 5 months with a baby girl and from the looks of it she's normal and healthy, at 7 months to ease my mind I'm going to get a 4D ultrasound. Good Luck with everything and I would like to keep in touch with you throughout your pregnancy to know everything is going well for you.
