Hair Dye

Hair Dye

Hello all. I am 6 wks, 1 day pregnant. My roots are showing pretty bad. Do any of you dye your hair? Have you ever heard not to? I've read and heard conflicting information. I had a miscarriage in November and I did dye my hair a few days before. Of course, I can't help but think it may have contributed! But these roots are bad! Let me know your thoughts.

My doctor told me it was fine as long as you do it in a well venilated area. I use to do mine outside.

My bf's mom is a hairdresser, and she told me that the color might not take.  So you run the risk of ending up with a color that you didn't want.  Also, if you highlight your hair, the bleach can fry your hair if its not monitered.  I had my hair highlighted about a week before I found out I was pregnant, and my hairdresser noticed that it was reacting funny with the bleach.......my first sign that I was pregnant.

My sister is a hairdresser and she got her hair highlighted during pregnancy and saw MANY women also getting it done.  When I'm pregnant I plan on continuing to highlight and to get my nails done.  I think we need anything we can to feel pretty/pamper ourselves around that time :)

My friend just got her hair highlighted and she was 35 wks pregnant, and it looked beautiful. So i'd say it's ok.

oh - and the highlighting had NOTHING to do with your m/c.  They are usually caused my chomosomal issues, not hair dye.  Don't worry!

Thanks! I think I will just do it. I do it myself. Hopefully it turns out! I will make sure the fan is turned on and not stay in the bathroom while I am waiting to rinse it out.

I have heard its ok and not ok.  I just think its what your dr prefers you to do.  I had a different dr with my last pregnancy and he said its ok...then this one said no.  So who knows...I havent personally done it.  I dyed mine right before I found out I was preggo (I tried to go closer to my natural color so I didnt have roots).  Anyway - about a couple days later it was back to the lighter shade.  really strange.  So I havent done mine yet.  I am TRYING to wait and it is killing me.  I would love to go and get a pedicure before I have the baby!

I am in the same boat.  I'm thinking of just getting one of those sticks to color in my roots.  It makes me nervous, even though some docs say it's okay.

I've heard that you are not suppose to because Dr.'s are not sure how much of the chemicals are absorbed into your body thru you're scalp. I myself have done it during pregnancy (this is my third) and my babies were healthy. I didn't dye it as often as I would when I wasn't pregnant(that would be my suggestion). Go ahead a dye it, but like the previous post said try to do it as close to your natural color with a little pazazz so you can go loonger between touch ups.

I am a cosmetologist and also 38 weeks pregnant. This is my 3rd child and I have colored my hair throughout the pregnancies with all 3. As with any chemical just make sure you are not confined in an airtight small room. Baby will be fine!

I took the risk of colouring during pregnancy and all turned out alright but I was told, as posted above, that the chemicals do enter through the scalp. I thought of all the research that decades of colouring, at least with dark colours, can cause bladder cancer in some people. I avoided rubbing the colour into the scalp and did not colour during the first 3 months.
I believe that is the main "window" when most fetal organs are formed and when fetal development can be disrupted with chemicals.

I did highlights pulled through a cap.  Almost nothing touched my scalp, maybe a little drip here and there, and I waited until after the first trimester.  Nothing changed about texture or color.  The research lately has been pretty convincing that there isn't a problem -- wisely, they also looked at the hairdressers who were doing all that dyeing and found those women did not have an increased risk to their own pregnancies.  So it certainly can't be the inhaling.  If you can, consider highlights rather than overall, but it probably won't hurt you either way.

My doctor told me not to do it.  I used to do hair and I agree with IaoAbri.  They just don't know how much of which chemicals are absorbed and if they pass through the placent, so I have switched from all over color to highlights (the color doesn't touch the scalp).  It's not that important to me to take a chance.

My hairstylist won't do any color the first 3 months, then only highlights.  I read some studies that suggest haircoloring is safe but that temporary colors (like Nice & Easy)  are actually less safe because they contain carcinogens (ingredients known to cause cancer).  Long term effects are not well documented.

Personally, I would wait until after 12 weeks before doing anything, just to be safe.  I believe highlights are safer because they don't penetrate your scalp.
