Heartbeat Detected

Heartbeat Detected

I just had an ultrasound today (6 weeks). The baby's heartbeat was detected and was at 122. The dr & nurse this is good and definitely lowers the possibility of miscarriage. Is this true? If a heartbeat is detected, does it mean my chances of miscarriage are low?

Detecting the heartbeat is a good sign but still no guarantee.  I would remain optimistic.  As you reach 12 and 13 weeks your chances of miscarriage become more slim.

I have always heard that the chances of m/c decrease once you've heard the heartbeat. Congrats on your BFP and have a happy nine months!

Yes, after hearing/seeing the heartbeat your chances are lower.  Then after you get through your first trimester the chances are really really low.

Good luck and Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, once you have seen the hb this does lower the chances of a mc. It is a good sign to see a hb. good luck and keep positive.

Once the heartbeat has been detected, the rate for miscarriage goes down to between 7 and 10% chance of miscarriage (depends on whos statistics you look at).  There are no guarantees of course but things sound good for you at this time.

Good luck.

Thank you! Yes I am very excited. We have been trying for close to 2 years and had a m/c in Feb. They followed my hcg levels which stil seemed to slowly increase. So finally had a D&C in March. Its been a long year. I turn 30 next week and this is the BEST BIRTHDAY GIFT that I could have asked for!

Hello there.   I just went through my first IVF.   My first beta was 42 and my second 159.  On Friday I started having very dull cramps.   No blood but a little discoloration after I use the restroom.   Sat. I went in for my first ultrasound.   The Dr. could not see a sac, heartbeat, nothing.   I am so so scared that this pregancy is over.   I was 6 weeks 2 days when I went in.    Can anyone offer advise?   My fertility clinic will be calling me shortlly with my blood work results.   It is so hard to wait.   Thank you in advance!!!   Amy

Amy, it could just be that you are early. I went in for an u/s last week and they didn't see anyting but the gestational sac. And last week they thought I measured at 6 weeks. So today, when they saw everything, they changed the date and now I am 6 weeks. Maybe you will have to follow up with another u/s. Hang in there. I know the feeling about waiting. Just try not to stress. Keeping you in my prayers!

I think the main reason seeing a heartbeat so early reduces the risk of miscarriage is because it at least rules out the possibility of a blighted ovum, which is the cause of 50% of miscarriage, so seeing the heartbeat cuts your risk of miscarriage in half.

I have been told the same thing, that once you hear a heartbeat your chances lower slightly.

My RE also said it reduces your risk of miscarriage.  He said now I have around 8 % chance of miscarriage, as opposed to almost 50% before since I have PCOS.  The people posting that they saw a heartbeat then unfortunantly lost the baby are part of that 8%.  Congratulations!  We just saw the heartbeat today at 6w6d, 170.  We are estatic.
